University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari, reports the Louisville-Courier Journal, has now spoken out about the advent of widespread legalized sports gambling.

“There’s all this money out here,” Calipari, 59, said at the NBA combine late last week in Chicago. “The gambling is not going away. It’s there. Maybe everybody sharing it (is possible) because it’s going to happen anyway.”

Kentucky lawmakers have traditionally been cautious about gambling expansion beyond horseracing, a major state industry. Historical racing terminals are becoming increasingly widespread at Kentucky racetracks and have fortified race purses and aided the finances of track owners. The slot-like devices allow users to wager on random recorded races.

Calipari added, “If anybody is going to be doing anything to get in the middle of the integrity of any of this game, they’re going to do it whether it’s legal gambling or illegal.”
