Remembering... 1977 UNLV beating Weber St.

Sep 29, 2015 3:00 AM

A few days after UNLV’s mind-blowing 80-8 dissection of FCS member Idaho State we revisit 1977 when the Rebels played another non-Division I school, Weber State.

The Rebels were led by quarterback Glenn Carano, then a senior and an All-American candidate.

Tony Knap was the UNLV coach back then and had gained his 98th career coaching win the week before against South Dakota.

Too bad the Rebels can’t play all 12 games outside D-1.

In the NFL, GT’s renowned football analyst John Bennett was high on Seattle handling the San Francisco 49ers. Some 38 years later, it’s a pick Bennett would have likely made again.

Also on this date publisher/editor Chuck Di Rocco noted that Congress had passed the controversial off track betting bill to outlaw interstate pari-mutuel wagering.

And the legendary Aladdin casino/resort hosted an NBA exhibition game that marked the initial West Coast appearance of Hall of Famer Julius Erving.

Dr. J’s New Jersey Nets played the Seattle Supersonics in Aladdin’s 7,500 seat theater.
