Packers, Colts may suffer Hall of Fame Game curse

The Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts are among the top dozen teams on the Las Vegas Westgate SuperBook board to win next season’s NFL title, with the Packers at 12-1 and the Colts at 25-1.

But it might already be “wait till next year” for both clubs thanks to the Hall of Fame Game curse.

On Aug. 7, the squads are scheduled to kick off the exhibition season with a meeting in Canton, Ohio, the 53rd such annual game in league history dating to 1962. with the exception of 1966 (scheduling difficulties) and 2011 (labor unrest).

None of those 104 previous teams involved went on to claim the crown that season. Five did reach the final rung, but were defeated in the title game. The last Fame team to be knocked off in the title game was St. Louis in 2001, which fell as a 14-point favorite to New England, 20-17.

But there is hope for Green Bay and Indianapolis – for 2017.

Six times Hall of Fame teams won the championship the ensuing season.

And, for handicappers who can’t wait to get a head start on the season, the SuperBook’s Jay Kornegay said he’s leaning toward making Green Bay a 1.5-point choice over Indy in that game.
