New Orleans Saints +3.5 at Caronlina Panthers (51.5) at 5:25 p.m. PT

The New Orleans Saints will be in Carolina tonight coming off a game that had them in the driver’s seat, until things changed toward the end and the Broncos managed to take a 25-23 victory.

Prior to that the Saints managed to put up over 40 points against San Francisco. Leading up the win over the 49ers, New Orleans managed just 25 and 21. So let’s assume, if we go with the mean, that the Saints will score about 27 against the Panthers.

I know, that’s not the sophisticated way that most handicappers do it, but humor me.

The Panthers are coming off a loss to Kansas City where they scored only 17 points. The previous week they managed just 13 but edged the L.A. Rams. Carolina did score 30 in an earlier win against Arizona. So if we look to the mean the Panthers are averaging just 20 points, in the past three weeks.

So let’s keep it simple. There’s nothing remarkable about these two teams. Both teams are unpredictable. So it’s a toss-up. I’m going to suggest that the Saints will score at least 27 and that Carolina will look to be dominant at home. Both teams will try to take advantage of NFL South leader Atlanta’s loss last Sunday at Philadelphia.

The Saints beat Carolina in the first matchup this season 41-38. Since the Panthers are at home, I’ll give them the edge, and even though recent games have been relatively ‘low-scoring,’ the 51.5 points might be doable.

Although I would be uncomfortable taking any side, I’d lean Carolina because they are home and take the OVER.

Prediction: Carolina 28, New Orleans 27
