On The Mark | From time to time in discussing college football I bring up “the triplets” – Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Northwestern. All lovable losers over the years who often pay at the betting window, especially when going off as a sizeable underdog.

Most of the time this trio isn’t taken seriously by their opponents for they don’t carry a fear factor. That said, you rarely hear Beat Vandy in Knoxville or Beat Wake at North Carolina or Beat Northwestern in South Bend. If you played the triplets parlay this past week you went 3-0. That’s why we love them.
Mind you, none of the covers came easy, but they did come. Wake rallied in the fourth quarter to salvage the spread against the Irish, Northwestern downed Nebraska in OT and Vandy escaped Western Kentucky by 14 as a closing 13.5 favorite.
This week you have another opportunity to back the triplets – Wake Forest visits Syracuse, Vandy hosts Kentucky and Northwestern welcomes Purdue. You will have to channel surf to find them, but make a cameo stop. It could be rewarding.
To put a bow on last week’s games, they naturally ran the gamut. Bedlam was that and so much more with Oklahoma beating Oklahoma State with, of all things, a key defensive stop in a 62-52 thriller at Stillwater. Then there was Old Dominion 6, Charlotte 0 and Army amazingly shutting out Air Force without throwing a single pass!
I kid you not. A total ground assault on the Fly Boys. Can’t wait for Army-Navy in a few weeks.
As for the BCS, the Big Ten took a massive hit. Both Ohio State and Penn State can only hope for a Rose Bowl bid. The only shot for a Big Ten team in the Final Four appears to be Wisconsin and they could fall this week against the team that bludgeoned the Buckeyes – Iowa.
The most interesting game on the docket is the return of Catholics vs. Convicts, aka Notre Dame at Miami. A lot is riding on that outcome. The camouflage could make a comeback. And another pre-game fight is possible.
Our Final Four last week was Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Clemson. We haven’t changed our minds, but Oklahoma is our No. 5 with Miami set to pounce if they upend the Irish.
No, we haven’t turned our backs on the unbeaten Badgers, but they need to run the table and hope for some luck. As for the Pac-12, it’s Washington or bust with the lean on bust.
Odds c/o Wynn Las Vegas
Rutgers +31 at Penn State: We actually nailed this spread on the button. Look for Barkley to take out two weeks of frustration on the Scarlet Knights. PENN ST.
