VSiN stands to make Supreme gain

VIP On the Mark | The future has never looked brighter for gaming in Vegas. If only I could say the same about all my selections. I’m still steaming about the missed extra point that cost me a cover with Wisconsin in the Ohio State Big Ten title game. But just like the AGA, we are a persistent bunch.
It has been nearly one year since Brent Musburger “retired” from ESPN. He did so knowing his son Brian had a vision for a 24-hour network devoted strictly to sports betting and Brent was the focal point.
Five days a week he anchors “My Guys In the Desert,” which airs from 3 to 5 p.m. weekdays and 8-10 a.m. weekends. It is the gold standard of broadcasting for wagering information on all sports; and the best aspect of the broadcasts is in always sticking to topic.
The network calls South Point home and it has been the perfect marriage. As the network continues to evolve, South Point has thrived on the publicity as Michael Gaughan has taken the ball and run with it. South Point is now a home to the National Finals Rodeo activities just concluded at the Thomas & Mack, the Professional Bull Riders, PGA Bowling and now the sponsor of a second NASCAR event in Vegas.
With the Supreme Court last week finally hearing the case to legalize sport betting beyond Nevada and three other states, a network like VSiN will absolutely explode if the resolution passes, which at long last seems probable when a decision comes down in late spring or early summer of 2018.
As the expression goes, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. GamingToday is VSiN in printed form. I have gone to every Global Gaming Expo in Vegas over the past 17 years or so. In the beginning, not a peep about sports betting. No need for G2E to risk negative publicity by discussing or even acknowledging something that was not going to happen anytime soon.
Oh how the climate has changed.
Year after year the American Gaming Association has used G2E and the World Series of Poker as venues to bring the fight for legalizing a practice that has been going on all over the USA without regulation or fear of arrest. I feel certain for the first time that the highest court in the land will recognize the mood of the country toward betting has changed and will finally do the right thing.
No better person to spread the word than Musburger, who often did so subtly on his telecasts of every major sports event by hinting as to the effect gambling had on games and TV ratings. By what Musburger and Jimmy The Greek were not allowed to say on “The NFL Today” way back when, he now champions a genie that is finally ready to come out of the bottle.
Musburger is on my Mount Rushmore with Bob Costas, Howard Cosell and Jim McKay as the four who have had the most influence in sports radio and television in my lifetime. We are all on the verge of something very exciting.
There is an expression, “follow the money” when it comes to looking at the betting lines. The public often does because it is a guide for those who value the teams receiving the most betting support along with where the sharks want to throw down the big bucks.
Follow the money is also the reason Vegas has an NHL Golden Knights, the NFL Raiders in three years, arenas like T-Mobile and the just started Raiders stadium. Expect a future Super Bowl, the NBA to call Vegas home and baseball not far behind. By 2025, I think we will have all four major sports.
The future has never looked brighter for gaming in Vegas. If only I could say the same about all my selections. I’m still steaming about the missed extra point that cost me a cover with Wisconsin in the Ohio State Big Ten title game. But just like the AGA, we are a persistent bunch.
