After failing to get through NFL Playoffs, Vega$ marathon was a relief

I was settled in with a nice bottle of wine and Dino my dog next to me as we got ready to watch the NFL divisional playoff games. I tried very hard to watch them, but could not take it any longer.
Sometimes we just may be walking around lucky. For some reason I hit Channel 99 on my cable box and there was a “Vega$” marathon on. “Vega$” was a TV show that aired from 1978 to 1981 staring my old friend Robert Urich who was from Toronto, Ohio, which is just ten miles up the road from Steubenville.
If you weren’t around Las Vegas back in the late 70’s and early 80’s you just don’t know what you missed. You can see much of what Las Vegas looked like, the acts performing back then, on this show filmed entirely here, much of it at the old Desert Inn, one of my favorite hangouts back then.
It was a great show and I would run into Urich from time to time; he was a very cool guy who loved to talk about the “ville.” One of his co-stars in the show was the beautiful Phyllis Davis, who actually ended up living in Henderson and would from time to time in her older years stop by Brando’s to play some slots. She was a super person.
Urich died at a very young 55, but his memory will be etched in Las Vegas and back in his Ohio hometown. If you ever get a chance take in a few episodes, you could see Dean Martin, Minnesota Fats and tons of old stars. Yes, I was sitting around lucky.
I went back to the Steelers game and it ended as they made a late TD to only lose by 3, but that didn’t help my teaser at -1 or my under 41. The final was 45-42. Thank you Vegas.
My friend from New Orleans texted me as the Saints looked to have their game vs. the Vikings locked up, and I agreed. The last play of the game is just unexplainable let alone the taking of a knee letting the game fall at the perfect 5. The Vikings opened up as a -4 point favorite and were bet up to -5.5 so, depending on who you bet and when, you could have won but most of the tickets were a push. Both sides won however on teasers.
This week we have the conference championship games on Sunday with the Brady Bunch going through the motions as they head to yet another Super Bowl. The pointspread vs. the Jags came out -9 and has not moved yet. I deplore laying -9 in a game like this, I just don’t see a take here. The Pats defense will not make Bortles look like a good QB as the butter defense of the Steelers did.
I once did a Kentucky Derby seminar and made a statement that if there was one horse that had no shot of winning it was Mine that Bird; in fact, I stated he would finish last. He was sent off at 50-1 and stormed home in the slop to win.
The Jaguars have no shot at beating the PATRIOTS in New England with Blake Bortles at QB.
The second game on Sunday will match the Vikings vs. the Eagles and again Philly will be the home dog, getting +3.5 points. Can their defense pull it off again? This bettor says no way and in fact they will be lucky to score 10 points. The Vikings look to be destined after last week’s win to be the first team in NFL history to play the Super Bowl on their home field. I will step out again and lay the points on the road with the VIKES!
As for college hoops, the big game during the week comes Thursday between Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga. SAINT MARY’S will be getting some juicy points here, looking for triple revenge, including the finals in the West Coast tournament last year. The Zags are basically a new team. We look for the Gaels from Moraga, CA to get the cover with a shot at a rare straight up win vs. the Zags.
If you are just sitting around watching something that does not agree with you, get your clicker and go channel surfing. You could be lucky and get “Vega$” on the flat screen.
