Former UFC owner Frank Fertitta III is heading a group eyeing the possible acquisition of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Tuesday.
Fertitta, along with his brother Lorenzo, own Zuffa, LLC, which is the company that previously owned the UFC and control Red Rock Resorts the operating company for Station Casinos. UFC was sold to WME-IMG for $4.2 billion in 2016.
It’s believed Fertitta would have to divest his gambling company interests before being approved to purchase an NFL team. Fertitta’s third-cousin, Tilman, purchased the NBA’s Houston Rockets in 2017. Tilman Fertitta continues to operate numerous gambling businesses including the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas.
Current owner Jerry Richardson is selling the Panthers amid allegations of inappropriate workplace behavior.
