Del Mar's 5 with a side of NFL Preseason

Aug 7, 2018 3:00 AM

Big week for the NFL Preseason following the debut in Canton at the Hall of Fame game. We hope the fans could keep track of the new rules. Some of these games may take four hours to play, so keep those coolers loaded with ice cold beer and plenty of wings. We will have a few plays this week looking to get on track after losing our bet in the 4th quarter last week by the hook.

Before we get to our NFL picks we will go over the first five races at Del Mar for Wednesday.

Race 1: $16K starter allowance fillies and mares travel a mile on the grass. No. 5 Believe Indeed will be our key runner. She was claimed for $25K from her last race at Belmont Park back in May off a nice win going 1-1/16 on the grass. Gets into this race off her one start for $16K, which she won for fun. Also has three nice works here at Del Mar. No. 3 Royal Asscher is the stablemate of Believe Indeed and she gets her first start off the $16K Bob Hess claim. She won here on July 27 when sprinting 5-1/2 furlongs. Has won on the grass in the past. 5-3

Race 2: $12,500 runners travel 1-1/16 on the dirt. No. 2 My Farmer has run here one time and got the win. He will try and take them wire-to-wire. No. 4 Plum Dandy did not like the grass last out and now gets back on the dirt in his second start off the Doug O’Neill claim. His last work says he is on go. No. 8 Shackleford Banks has run here four times with two wins, a second and a third. A must use on the drop. If the top two get into a speed duel, he will be motoring late. 2-4-8

Race 3: Two-year-old maidens go sprinting five furlongs on the grass and we will need to go four deep using No. 1 Oracle of Omaha who has been showing speed routing on the grass. We like the turnback to a sprint and jockey Drayden Van Dyke jumping on for Peter Miller, who also sends out No. 4 Hartel off a big last work. He may be the speed here with Flavien Prat on. No. 7 Truck Salesman ran five furlongs on the dirt in his debut race here July 21 and adds speed to the race. No. 8 Flying Scotsman is a first-timer for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer by the good turf sire English Channel. Look for this 2yo to come out running. 1-4-7-8

Race 4: $20K maiden fillies and mares go 5-1/2 furlongs. No. 4 Irish Cream N Kafe takes her 7th start. We like that she came off the pace in her last race and now may have found her style. No. 7 Snaked ran two times last year as a 2yo vs. better. She finds a soft spot and looks the speed of the speed. No. 9 Tengas Angel is our price play off a set of real nice works here. Gets the low profile Octavio Vergara Jr. riding for Jeff Mullins. 4-7-9

Race 5: $50K starter allowance fillies and mares travel a mile on the grass. No. 1 Mongolian Window had a horrible trip last out here going 1-1/16 on the grass vs. better. She comes back in a good spot and gets a rider switch to Tyler Baze. No. 4 Marjorie E looks well spotted off her maiden score and had a big last work. Prat, on board for the win last out, sticks with her. 1-4

NFL Preseason

Thursday, Aug. 9

Panthers - 2.5 at Bills (34): Head coach Sean McDermott for the Bills gets his second season and things don’t look good. Buffalo has gone 0-4 ATS in the last four Game 1’s during preseason. PANTHERS

Bears +2 at Bengals (36): The Cincy fans and team we hope will remember the thrashing Chicago put on them last year in Cincy in front of the hometown fans, 33-7. In days of old this bettor would be waiting in line to put money on the Bengals in this spot. BENGALS

Bucs +1.5 at Dolphins (33.5): In the battle for the swamp land in Florida (I own some), we will side with the Fish as Tampa has gone 0-5 ATS in their last five Game 1’s. DOLPHINS

Cowboys +3.5 at 49ers (no total): Lot of hype on the Niners to make it to the Super Bowl. We say let’s bet against the hype in Game 1, taking more than a field goal with the America’s team, which is also the better one. COWBOYS

Big Red update: Been getting a lot of inquiries on Steubenville Big Red from our many Ohio transplants now living large in Las Vegas. I have reached out to Reno, so we should have info for next week’s column.

Get out and take a shot. Slots, sports, ponies – you could be walking around lucky and not even know it.
