Irish Olympian bet on himself to lose pre-London event

A member of Ireland’s Olympic team apparently felt he couldn’t beat his upcoming opponent in a pre-London Games event so he bet on himself to lose the match.

That is the allegation under investigation by the Olympic Council in Ireland.

The allegation charged that the athlete won about $4,800 on the wager that he would lose. He reportedly then withdrew about $4,435 in cash from his account with a bookie joint.

In England, it’s possible to bet a proposition will win, as is customary in the U.S., or the wager can be that it will lose.

The English bookmaker, Betfair, has proposed win/lose wagering in California and that state’s horse racing regulators have taken it under advisement.
