Vietnamese police have broken up an online football (soccer) gambling ring worth around $26 million, local media reports.
Four persons were under arrest as authorities look to halt the black market betting that increases during sporting events like the current World Cup.
Gambling remains illegal in Vietnam except for the state-run lottery and a few casinos open to foreigners. The gambling restrictions are often ignored during major sports events when players bet online or with illegal bookies.
Under Vietnam’s criminal code, anyone participating in gambling or organizing gambling could face up to 10 years in jail.
