The PGA Tour is in Paramus, New Jersey this week with the12th edition of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Legalized sports betting will be taking place throughout the state at various sportsbooks and through mobile devices on the golf course grounds, just as it does in Las Vegas when Southern Nevada hosts its annual PGA Tour event.
Observers note that this will be the third major sporting event to occur in a state with legalized sports gambling since the May Supreme Court decision overturning the ban on Nevada-style sport betting in all other states. The NFL’s New York Giants hosted the Cleveland Browns in a pre-season game on Aug. 9 and The New York Jets welcomed the Atlanta Falcons the next day.
The PGA Tour has joined the major sports leagues in expressing the desire to be compensated by those booking bets on their events. The first of four legs of the FedEx Cup will take place less than a half-hour’s drive from the Meadowlands FanDuel Sportsbook. However, DraftKings is currently the only state operator with a mobile app available for use within New Jersey.
FedEx Cup Points leader Dustin Johnson is the current favorite at 6/1 to win the FedEx Cup and the $10 million first-place prize. Justin Thomas is the second favorite (8/1), followed by Brooks Koepka (10/1), and the trio of Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tiger Woods all at 12/1.
