If things go according to plan to restart sports later this summer, gamblers across the country will have another professional sports league to bet on.
Last week, The Premier Lacrosse League announced a partnership with Genius Sports as its official data and integrity partner for sports betting, powering a host of live betting markets for the first time to enhance the in-game fan experience.
“We feel like the PLL is the most innovative sports league in the world and today is another testament to the hard work of our leadership team,” said PLL Co-Founder & CEO Mike Rabil. “We’ve partnered with the premier data provider in Genius Sports and will continue to work closely with top-tier operators to ensure a first-in-class experience for bettors.
Rabil also said they have been in touch with major online sports books, who are excited about the prospects of covering the PLL this year and beyond. But there is nothing to announce as of yet with regard to a larger partnership.
Earlier this month, the league announced the PLL Championship Series, which is a two-week quarantined and fanless tournament scheduled to run from July 25-August 9 on NBC and NBC Sports Network.
With matchups to be drawn sometime in June, the league’s seven teams (each will play four games) will compete in a 14-game group play format (site TBA) to determine seeding for the elimination round, which starts Aug. 4 ending with a champion crowned on Aug. 9. Seeding will be determined by win/loss record and aggregate point differential.
“We look at sports betting as a unique way to drive net new fans to the sport of lacrosse and further engage our existing audience,” said Rabil. “Sports betting has and will continue to grow in the United States. We’ve already seen adoption of sports betting from states that are key to the lacrosse market, especially New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and we are anticipating more movement there.”
The PLL is the second professional league Genius Sports has partnered with as the Philadelphia-based National Lacrosse League (NLL) came on board last October. In January, BetMGM became the official and exclusive gaming partner of the NLL, marking the first-ever gaming partnership for the sport of lacrosse in the United States.
“There’s plenty of data out there to represent the power of sports betting in the United States and we anticipate that lacrosse will be a big part of that,” Rabil said. “There have been surveys conducted showing upwards of 70 percent of American sports fans indicating that they would be more likely to watch a sporting event if they were to bet on it.
“The announcement itself garnered significant attention, further validating or belief that sports bettors will be drawn to PLL betting lines and that existing PLL fans will want to bet on games. Anecdotally, we think lacrosse will be a great sport to bet on. It’s a game of runs and no lead is safe. Sports bettors will have to stay glued right up until the last minute!”
