Knights still going strong in playoffs and Mob Museum opens speakeasy

May 01, 2018 3:00 AM

First we had March madness, now we have May madness! As of Monday morning, our coveted Golden Knights are 1-1 in the second round of the NHL playoffs on the road to the final battle for the Stanley Cup. It is so exciting!

The Viva Las Vegas festival resounded out of the Orleans arena recently with the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis (pompadour and all) looking incredible at the age of 82 and still pounding those ivories and setting them on fire!

Also, after the amazing Jerry Lee the Stray Cats came onstage for their first performance together in 10 years. It was fabulous!

This annual rockabilly event, put together by promoter Tom Ingram, also included a car show, shopping, pool parties, lots of live music and more.

V upgrades to ZZ

ZZ Top topped them all at their opening at the Venetian Theater. I remember about 20 years ago when they played at the Flamingo (Hilton at that time) and I saw them emerge from a limo – beards and all! These are friendly, down-home men and when they get those guitars going it is fantastic! They have been together for 49 years so next year will be ZZ Tops 50th anniversary!

Mob expands

The Mob Museum has a new real speakeasy downstairs where you can learn more about prohibition, the speakeasy movement, and actually have a legal cocktail or two. What a great idea!

Speaking of downtown, former Mayor Oscar Goodman has become another actor/performer in A Mob Story at The Plaza. Actually, he is an understudy of the narrator, but he has his heels well dug into this part.

Goodman has appeared in films (“Casino” and “Red Herring”), in interview concert settings, and is a true character actor as well as a former mayor and criminal defense attorney. He is part of Las Vegas history. Stop also at The Plaza, dine at his Booze and Broads steakhouse and enjoy yourself in the surroundings of Old Vegas.

Happy 60th

I was at the party for Vinny Adinolfi of the Bronx Wanderers and did not feel any animosity between Tony Orlando and Wayne Newton, two great Vegas names and two terrific entertainers. They have apparently resolved their differences, which is a good thing. Bucky Heard of The Righteous Brothers was also there for Vinny’s 60th birthday of. Happy Birthday Vinny!

Speaking of birthdays, my last kiss to the seventies is happening the end of this month when I turn 80 years old, oh my!

J-Lo back at PH

The lovely and talented Jennifer Lopez will be back at Planet Hollywood for 16 amazing performances from May 16 through June 16.

The gorgeous songstress and entertainer Gwen Stefani begins her residency at PH with shows on June 27, 29 and 30.

Adam Sandler (always makes me giggle) will be at the Cosmopolitan, at The Chelsea, on May 12. He  will be bringing on some surprise guests. With Adam, you never know. This should be a hot night out!

Ricky Martin will be at The Park Theater for six sensational shows, May 23-June 3.

U-2 will fill the T-Mobile Arena for this two performances on May 11 and 12.

Banding together

The Las Rageous band festival went splendidly! More than 12,000 were at the Las Vegas Events Center downtown for this sensational event that included Five Finger Death Punch, Judas Priest, In the Moment, Hollywood Undead, Saxon and more. It was memorable!

Day Clubs heat up

The weather here has been warm – in the 90s all last week, and it is sure to rev up interest in the day clubs at the casinos. Rehab (Hard Rock), Marquee (Cosmopolitan), Wet Republic (MGM Grand), Tao Beach (Venetian), Liquid (Aria), among many others, are wonderful places to revel in the sun, splash in the pool, and party from day to night.

Hello, Roseanne

Roseanne Barr brings her acerbic quick wit and comedic talents to the Orleans this weekend, May 5. I hear the show is already sold out so I hope you got your tickets as this is one lady you should not miss.

The Temptations will follow with their soulful sounds May 19-20. Who could forget “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” or “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone”?

Looks like the Orleans is getting more and more high profile line-ups. It is a great theater venue and easy to park. Without fees!

At the cinema

Joaquin Phoenix has them all touting his performance in “You Were Never Really Here,” a new release you must catch. It is a haunting and surreal search into a man’s inner self that makes this a worthy, A-rated film. I agree with the critics this time, it is great!

Support Knights

There will be a road game watch party at the Downtown Las Vegas on Wednesday for Game 4 of the Stanley up playoff series between the Golden Knights and San Jose.

It will be held at the Events Center presented by the D Las Vegas with the cost of admission free. Those in attendance will have the chance to win a variety of  Golden Knights prizes. Fans can view the game on a 72-foot screen with stadium sound.!
