Truluck’s a skillful choice taking in Del Mar

When returning from vacation I always like to write about a place I ate at if my vacation spot is a place someone from Las Vegas might also go to. Well, if you like to bet horses there is no better place to go than Del Mar, especially on opening day.
I had a great time as always in Del Mar and as usual I ate well. One of the places we ate at was Truluck’s Steak, Seafood and Crab House located at 8990 University Center Lane in La Jolla, California. Truluck’s is about a 20-25-minute drive from Del Mar, but it is so worth the trip.
For my appetizer I ordered the Crab Cakes, which were the best I’ve ever had. They are filled with jumbo lump crab meat and not a lot of filler. It rested on a bed of rémoulade sauce that complimented the crab cakes perfectly. My buddy Dave Cokin, a longtime handicapper, was with me and had the Escargot, which he loved.
For my next course I went with the Lobster Bisque, very good as well, which you would expect in a fine seafood restaurant. Dinner entrees were a tough choice considering all the mouthwatering choices like one of my favorites, Sea Bass. It’s crab season and they had so many different crab offerings along with South African Lobster Tails, but I was feeling like a steak tonight and decided on the Thick Cut Prime N.Y. Strip Steak.
First off, this steak was cooked to absolute perfection and just melted in your mouth. It was so juicy and flavorful and the seasoning and spices they use are amazing. This was a 16-ounce strip served with Parmesan mashed potatoes, steamed asparagus or creamed spinach for $56. This is lower than what I am used to paying on the Las Vegas Strip, and you got a side dish, which in most steakhouses is at least a $9 add on.
Del Mar has become an annual summertime stop for me and I can tell you Truluck’s will become part of that tradition each year moving forward. The final piece of this magnificent feast was dessert, and I went with the Baked Alaska which was done tableside. The presentation was tremendous and it was delicious! The next time I go back I will be going for the Chocolate Bag. The only reason I didn’t get it this time is I was too full.
It’s the actual size of a brown paper bag you would use to carry your lunch. It’s made entirely of dark chocolate. The “bag” is then filled with a cream custard and berries. When the waiter delivers it to the table he cracks the chocolate bag so you get chocolate, berries and crème in every bite.
The wait staff goes above and beyond, and our waiter was spot on with every recommendation he made.
I give Truluck’s Seafood, Steak and Crab House my highest rating of 4 Forks.
