Well, believe it or not it’s football season already as we are ready to start the colleges and the NFL is wrapping up the preseason.
What I am going to try to do this football season is hit as many Sports Bars as I can and write about the food and which teams are that bar’s Home Team. We all love watching the games and nothing goes better with football than cold beer and good food.
We are starting our sports bar journey with Rum Runner, which has three locations around town – 1801 E. Tropicana Ave., 6658 Boulder Hwy., and 3050 E. Desert Inn Rd. All three are Green Bay Packers bars.
Excuse me if I still sound a little bitter about that Super Bowl you guys won a few years back as you beat my Pittsburgh Steelers. To show I’m ready to forgive you, my first team bar reviewed is Packers.
Here are two important things I look for when I go to a sports bar: How many TV’s do they have? Can you see them clearly from anyplace in the bar?
Well, I like the setup of TV’s at Rum Runner as they are placed throughout the place and all around the top of the bar itself. Just about anywhere you could sit or stand is going to have a great view of the game. So they pass the first test with flying colors.
The second part important to me is the food. Face it, we are going to be here for at least four hours watching the game. That means I am going to be eating. My favorite food when watching a football game by far is chicken wings. I honestly don’t know of a more perfect food.
So I pretty much can assure you every sports bar review I do will have a comment about their wings.
The Rum Runner bar itself doesn’t have a restaurant but they are attached to the Badger Café right next-door so servers come, take your order and bring your food.
There are two separate bills, one for food and your bar bill. They bring an order form for your wing selections. Check the box for what flavor you want and how many.
They sell their wings in groups of 6, 12, 18 and 24 and have 12 different flavors to choose from. You get ranch or blue cheese dressing along with celery and carrot sticks. Their wings were very good and reasonably priced – an order of 6 was $4.49. You can add fries or homemade chips for $1 extra.
If we are not eating wings, most likely we are having a burger. They do the burger just like the wings, providing an order form and you build your burger.
Start with ½ lb. Angus Beef Patty then check the box for all the fixings you want on your burger. All the toppings are free except tomatoes and cheese, which are 50 cents extra. They have some premium toppings like grilled mushrooms or a Fried Egg for a $1 more.
The burger is only $3.99 before you start so even loaded up you’re only looking at $6. The fancy burger joints on the Strip are $12 or more. You also get to pick the temperature of the burger so if medium rare is the choice you can get it that way. Great burger at a small price just the way you like it.
Whether you’re a Packers fan or, like me, have a big bet on Green Bay that day, you’ll want to stop at a Rum Runner. It’s fun to hang out where everyone is rooting for my team, too. It makes me feel special.
So check out one of the Rum Runner locations. I give it a rating of 3.50 Forks out of 4.
