CHER – I cherish that goddess! She is back at the Park Theatre at the Monte Carlo through Feb. 3. If you have never (I cannot believe that!) seen her perform in person you will be overwhelmed by her sheer presence, her vocals, her entire production. She is a true entertainer and gorgeous. Now we know that over 70 is the new 50! How’s that for the real baby boomers! Cher is a true icon – see her!
Sometimes I like to go back to see a show again. The Beatles LOVE at The Mirage is definitely worth seeing more than once. This production, which has had sold out audiences since it opened, displays a happiness that permeates the entire theater. It is one show you can definitely take your family to. I love LOVE!
A good murder
The D downtown has a fun show that has been around a while in different venues with different performers, but it is still a solid hit – Marriage Can be Murder. Take a break and have a giggle, it is murderously fun!
Santana is back at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay with his wife Cindy Blackman Santana (the hottest drummer to date!!!). The duo has reinvented his greatest hits – not as oldies, but as newly imagined pieces.
The first time I heard Carlos Santana he surprised me. His delicate weaving of sounds and messages gave me the chills. “Black Magic Woman” was always my favorite. He is also an artist who believes in giving back to the community and is currently recording a new album in Henderson. You’ve got until Feb. 3 to see him.
And now, the Oscars
As a film buff I have seen almost all of the nominees and it is hard to choose, but I will.
For best picture I will go with Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.” It is an interesting concept and a flashback to those 1950’s horror films, except it sends a distinct message of today’s tolerance for differences in each other.
Sally Hawkins’ exquisite performance leads me to choose her as Best Actress. Last year’s performance in Maudie did not give her the due she deserved. She has a special, deep insight to her characters.
Best Actor will probably be Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) but I was astounded by Daniel Day Lewis’ performance in “Phantom Thread!” That film made me realize how PTSD can challenge a life. His portrayal of a seemingly androgynous male fashion designer of gowns for society ladies was ultimate! His emergence from a self-imposed world into the world of reality - and eventual marriage - was breathtaking!
The Orleans casino/resort showroom has Arsenio Hall on Feb. 3 and Engelbert Humperdinck Feb. 10 and 11.

On Feb. 11 Good Vibrations: A Celebration of the Beach Boys will take over the showroom.

At the cinema
See “Phantom Thread!” I mentioned it above. It is incredible, beautiful, touching, the ultimate happy ending!
“The Post” missed the mark. It was a wooden Katherine Graham (Meryl Streep) as a ghost of the lady who really had much more to her than the social parties of Washington, D.C. She was around at the same time as Cosmo and Helen Gurley Brown. These women helped bring a new era to journalism. See it as it is a good historical piece, but loses its impact.
“The Commuter” – love Liam Neeson – was a patchwork quilt of editing gone astray. I liked the story but the editing was poor. Neeson is still a great action actor and really believable.
Odds & Ends
The Neon Museum is aglow with Brilliant! Take a look see; the experience is an audiovisual immersion that takes you into the history of Las Vegas through sight and 3D sound. What a treasure trove!
Feb. 2 didn’t only produce ground hogs it also gave me one of my best friends. Happy Birthday, Lu!
Have a happy week – and good luck on those Super Bowl bets.
