A 4th for all tastes in Vegas

Summer is officially here, June is almost over and we are on the brink of the Fourth of July.
Of course our town will light up the sky for the holiday. Caesars Palace will kick things off at about 9:15 p.m. this Saturday, June 30, with a spectacular fireworks display from one of the tower rooftops presented by Fireworks by Grucci, one of the world’s premier fireworks companies.
Grucci will also be handling the amazing displays at the Station Casinos properties across the valley – Green Valley Ranch, Red Rock Resort, Texas Station and Fiesta Rancho. All shows are scheduled for 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4.
The Plaza downtown will also celebrate this Saturday with its annual Independence Day party beginning at 7 p.m. at its fully renovated rooftop pool. There will be a DJ, a hot dog eating contest and lots of fun. At 10 p.m. the sky will light up with fireworks.
Mandalay Bay, on the Strip, and Stratosphere, downtown, will present their fireworks on July 4 at 9 and 9:15 p.m. respectively
What an exciting time to be in Las Vegas!
Locally there are many new things happening. Downtown Summerlin has a new series – Summerlin Sounds, which offers free live music every Wednesday on the lawn between 5 and 9 p.m. Tomorrow, June 27, you can hear Stoked and Kaylie Foster.
There is no show July 4, but Daniel Park and Sonia Barcelona will perform July 11 and Penrose will be there July 18. Chill back and enjoy!
Fleetwood Mac – how I loved them years back – are reunited sans Lindsey Buckingham and will be bringing their 50-city North American tour to T-Mobile Arena on Nov. 30. I can’t wait to hear Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie with newcomers Mike Campbell and Neil Finn sing some of their classics like “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams” and “Rhiannon.”
Although Marilyn: The Musical has shut down, it will re-emerge at the Paris Theater on Sept. 4. Yay! How I love that Hollywood icon.
Comedian Eddie Griffin is in residency at The Sayers Club at SLS. You can catch him Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week at 8 p.m., although he will not perform this Wednesday, June 27.
Drag me to it!
RuPaul (I once was in NY for a radio interview live with him about 1998) is at Sake Rok at The Park for RuPaul’s Drag Race! It is a real dinner show – like we had when Vegas was younger! I loved the feeling of dinner and entertainment! Show times are 6:30 and 9 p.m. on Saturdays. RuPaul is lots of fun and he will have popular stars with him such as Shannel and India Ferrah.
We’ll miss Felix
My heart felt a sense of loss on hearing a great old friend and supporter passed away. Felix Rappaport, at the age of 65, succumbed to heart disease in his suite at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut on June 18.
When I arrived in Las Vegas in 1997 to make the neon city my home, Felix was one of the first to embrace me, guide me, and open doors for me. He was president of New York-New York Hotel and Casino at the time. He was a remarkable man with many talents, a quick wit and total involvement in the MGM properties he handled over the years, which also included Luxor, Excalibur and The Mirage.
What a career leap he made coming from Philadelphia, where he was in charge of a 500 room hotel, to head the massive 2,500 to 4,000 room MGM properties. He was with MGM for 20 years.
Felix took me under his wing and helped me beyond any expectations one could imagine. He was a great man. His death came suddenly and unexpectedly.
God rest his soul. May there always be people like Felix who reach out and touch other’s lives the way he did mine.
Get well Barry...
Barry Manilow is on the mend. After having to cancel his opening and birthday gala at Westgate a couple of weeks ago due to a bronchial infection (he turned 75 and doesn’t look a day over 45!) the divine man of music and song – a total showman – will return to Westgate July 19.
Pals Earl Turner and Clint Holmes – true pros – filled in at the last minute. Those with tickets for Barry got a gratis show and their tickets can be refunded or changed to a different date.
Another show, Blink-182, great punk rockers, had to cancel at Pearl at the Palms due to blood clots in drummer Travis Barker’s arms. The earliest the group will be able to perform is July and their next gig at Pearl will be Oct. 26 and 27.
…You too, Lu
The husband of my lifelong buddy Lu is back in the hospital. I send prayers daily to Lu to give her comfort and to husband Ben for a speedy recover.
Stay cool, go to a day club, have fun. Remember, the casinos have excellent a/c and lots of great summer deals.
