Disco is NOT dead! Spiegelworld Entertainment – producers of Absinthe at Caesars Palace and Opium at Cosmopolitan – has plans to bring their third creation, “We Are Here” to an undisclosed Las Vegas venue in 2019. The show gets its first public preview at the GlitterLoft in New York, July 31-Aug. 4.
Remember Disco Tex and The Sec-O-Lettes? “Get Dancin’” and “I Wanna Dance Witchoo” went platinum, baby. Yes, that was me! And yes, I am still enthralled with disco. Now disco has risen from the ashes with We Are Here, “a celebration of the beat which set the world on fire,” says their website.
I feel positive about this genre and production and can’t wait to see it. Stay tuned.
Love turns 12
Cirque du Soleil’s Love hits its 12th birthday. Yes, the musical of the Beatle’s songs and transformations has achieved twelve years of continual stellar performances at The Mirage.
This is a family show so bring your youngsters and whole crew. If you have never seen it, now is the time. If you saw it once, then it is time to re-visit this gem of a production.
IAC numero uno
The Italian American Club on East Sahara Avenue is one restaurant/social club that is engraved in Las Vegas’ history. I personally crave the food there and love the free parking. They also have great entertainment. Check out their website (iacvegas.com) for upcoming shows and lounge acts. It is old school Italian.
Speaking of great Italian restaurants, another eastside eatery, Ferraro’s, is my numero uno for Italian cuisine. It is genuinely mouth-watering and I’m heading there this week to have a dinner with my close pal, Lu and a few others.
Located at 4480 Paradise – across from the Hard Rock Hotel, which will transform into Virgin Hotels Las Vegas by next year – Ferraro’s has some of the greatest Italian food ever. Wish they had a westside location again. If they did I think it would be slam packed nightly. I love Italian food – northern, southern or whatever – it is great!
Carolyn pays up
Mayor Carolyn Goodman made good on her Stanley Cup Final bet with Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and wore a Capitals jersey, which she described as itchy. She is a woman of her word and a great lady.
I think the downtown revival she has helped develop makes sense and has brought back millions of people to the old Las Vegas. Check it out. Have a meal and libation at Oscar’s Steakhouse at the Plaza, and then walk Fremont Street.
Another place to check out is the newly renovated Palace Station. This is an amazing turnover of a faded place to a sparkling new one.
The Palms is currently undergoing renovation to bring back the twinkly sparkle of its original splash. This off-Strip property recently spent $620 million to complete phase one of the project. That’s a lot of sparkle!
The Station scene
Mom’s Night Out: Round 2! is at Green Valley Ranch this Saturday, July 7… Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters will be at Red Rock Resort next Friday, July 13… George Thorogood and The Destroyers come to Sunset Station’s outdoor amphitheater July 20…
Eric Paslay will be at Club Madrid at Sunset on July 21… Blue Oyster Cult comes to Green Valley Ranch Aug. 31… Blues fans can catch Les Dudek at Boulder Station’s Railhead on July 19 and Joe Louis Walker Aug. 2.
On a sad note
Heavy metal rocker Vinnie Paul, founder and drummer for Pantera, passed away unexpectedly on June 22. He was only 54.
Richard Harrison – The Old Man of “Pawn Stars” – passed away June 25 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was 77. He opened the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas in the early 1980s and the popular TV show debuted in 2009.
The viewing and funeral were held July 1 at the Palm Northwest Mortuary at 6701 North Jones Blvd.
Rest in peace Vinnie and Richard.
Only one Rita
Yes! My fellow Puerto Rican and super talented lady of stage, screen and TV – Rita Moreno – has been named Nevada Ballet Theatre’s Woman of the Year! I fell in love with this Tony, Grammy, Oscar, and Emmy winner way back in 1961 when I saw her as Anita in “West Side Story.”
Rita is not only a gifted talent but a true humanitarian who deserves this award, which will be presented at NBT’s 35th-anniversary Black & White Ball set for Jan. 26 at Aria. Congratulations, Rita!
Happy 4th of July!
