Where better to spend your time than in Las Vegas than a casino?

It is August, my darlings, and where better to spend your time than in a casino – shopping, movie going, sports betting, playing tables and slots, and, of course, eating! What wonderful restaurants. Plus there is all that fabulous entertainment.
The Killers – our very own hometown boys – closed out July with that fantastic performance in front of Caesars Palace on the 31st. It was an unexpected treat, and they killed (in a positive way) the crowd, as they do wherever they go. They will be back Dec. 3 when they play at Pearl Concert Theater at The Palms.
Speaking of bands, Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band will be coming to the Planet Hollywood showroom in October – more on that in a future column.
Sticking with the casino theme, another super celebrity chef has opened a new venue at The Tropicana. Robert Irvine, a self-made man, adventurer and chef, broke the ice, literally (instead of cutting a red ribbon), as he sledge-hammered a block of ice on July 27 at his newest location. I feel this will be a great place to dine and then see a show; Monti loves good food along with an evening of entertainment!
This & That
The Wynn’s sportsbook – updated, expanded, inviting, relaxing – is the new in-place for your sports betting. Charlie’s Bar and Grill is right next to it (where Zoozacrackers used to be).
Oscar (Goodman) continues his fame and fables – real life fables, stories no one could possibly make up. You can join him for a martini in the Lounge at his Steakhouse in the Plaza tonight or tomorrow (Aug. 8, 9), 4:30- 6 p.m. Then you can have dinner and eat what Oscar eats – Caesar salad, bone in ribeye, mac and cheese, and chocolate ice cream, only $29.
The Sharknado series of old B genre films is making its fifth time around. The LINQ casino on the Strip hosted the official world premiere of “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming,” this past weekend. Several cast members were on hand, including Ian Ziering, a former Chippendales star, Tara Reid, Cassiue Scerbo and Masiela Lusha.
On television, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” had Magic Mike Live producer and creative force Channing Tatum on the show. Tatum said the dancers in MML get abused by the women in the audience so often, they are constantly interviewing new bodies...OMG!
At the cinema
In the film world, I had the opportunity to view one of the best indie films I have ever seen – “Maudie!” This tragic/comedy is based on the true life story of Maud Lewis, a Nova Scotia folk artist in the style of Grandma Moses. Her poignant life story drove me to real tears. Sally Hawkings (a past Academy Award nominee) portrayed the leading role impeccably. I was also impressed with the ever talented Ethan Hawke, who I had the pleasure of seeing on Broadway way back in the days of Tony Randall’s National Actors Theater in “The Seagull.”
Every seat in the theater was occupied, a rarity in Las Vegas, and not a dry eye in the house. I feel an Oscar or two for this magnificent gem!
“Atomic Blonde” exploded with energy and the icy beauty and vengeance of Charlize Theron (Academy Award winner for “Monster”) is powerful. Ms. Teron is a fabulous, sexy (maybe that’s not pc but it’s true!) bold fighter in this film. I actually saw it a second time! You will not be disappointed, the action and violence are Hollywood at its best!
I sometimes like to dine at restaurants that are called run-of-the-mill, but in reality are not! Buca di Beppo, which has fabulous promo deals this month, is a very kitschy decorated place on West Lake Mead. This week I had the chicken Marsala and asked the waiter to have the chicken pounded into a cutlet style thinness, and was so happy I ordered it. The wine and freshly cut mushrooms are equal to some pricier venues.
Along that realm, Applebee’s (of all places) has stepped up their menu with some $10.99 and over dishes that include a choice of appetizer/salad and sides that are much better than in the past. I have a hunch they changed their purveyors, because the food tasted better – much better!
It is summer, too hot to cook, try out some of your local or hotel restaurants. There are many specials and special prices for players and their guests!
