NFL Betting Odds: Game Betting vs. Futures Betting

Football betting odds are available for EVERY game of the season. You can bet on basic NFL betting markets, like moneylines (which team will win?) and totals (how many combined points will be scored?), but there are also hundreds of prop bets, live in-game options, and many more to choose from.

When the NFL returns in the fall, be ready for Thursday night games on Amazon’s Prime Video. You’ll see a few Saturday games once college football’s regular season comes to an end in 2024 as well.

Futures bets are now focused on the odds to win Super Bowl 59. Watch out for other long-term betting markets, like the winner of next season’s MVP, Offensive Rookie of the Year, and others that become available in the offseason.

How NFL Odds Work

While decimal and fractional odds are more popular around the world, US sportsbooks use American odds to display NFL odds. American odds are denoted by a “+” or “-” sign in front of the odds.

American Odds, Explained

The American odds are based on $100 wagers, though you don’t actually need to bet $100. Payouts will be scaled up or down depending on the size of your bet. For example, successfully hitting a $100 bet on the Kansas City Chiefs listed as +110 moneyline underdogs would return $210, for a net profit of $110.

In order to scale “+” odds, you can divide the odds by 100 and multiply that result by the size of your bet. For example, a $50 bet on a Kansas City Chiefs moneyline (+110) would be calculated as (110/100)*$50 and yield a total result of $55.

A $50 bet on the 49ers, if they won the game at -130, would return $88.46 to the bettor ($38.46 profit plus the original $50 bet).

NFL Game Odds

There are different types of NFL odds, such as point spreads, moneylines, totals, futures, and props. Each bet type has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on your betting strategy and preferences. Here is a brief overview of each type of NFL odds.

Point spreads: This is the most common type of NFL bet, where you wager on the margin of victory or defeat of a team. For example, the point spread was -1.5 for the 49ers against the Chiefs, it means that the 49ers were favored to win by 1.5 points.

  • If you bet on the 49ers, they had to win by more than 1.5 points for you to win your bet.
  • With a bet on the Chiefs, Kansas City had to either win the game or lose by less than 1.5 points for you to win your bet.

Moneylines: This is a more straightforward type of NFL bet, where you wager on the outright winner of a game. For example, if the moneyline was -130 for San Francisco against Kansas City, it means that the 49ers are favored to win the game. If you bet $130 on the 49ers, you would win $100 if they win the game.

Totals (Over/Under): This is a type of NFL bet where you wager on the combined score of both teams in a game. For example, if the total is set at 47.5 for the 49ers and Chiefs, it means that the expected total score of both teams is 47.5 points. If you bet on the over, you will win your bet if the total score is more than 48 points or more.

If you bet on the under, you will win your bet if the total score is less than 47 points or less. The odds for either bet are -110, so you have to risk $110 to get back $210 (your risked money + the $100 bet). Sportsbooks add $10 as the vig — which is another term for the house edge.

As it turns out, sportsbooks hit a bullseye with the total for the most recent Super Bowl. The final score of 25-22 added up to 47, so under bettors at 47.5 won by the slimmest of margins. On the other hand, over bettors who caught the total at 46.5 picked up a win.

NFL Futures Odds

This will be the most common option for NFL odds until the 2024 NFL schedule is announced in mid-May.

Sportsbooks offer NFL futures odds throughout the offseason. NFL futures odds can include bets on the Super Bowl, conference, or division winners. Player futures odds can consist of markets like the NFL MVP and Rookie of the Year.

NFL Rookie of the Year odds arrive on sportsbook menus immediately following the NFL Draft. NFL MVP odds, like Super Bowl futures odds, come out right after the Super Bowl ends.

BetRivers, for instance, set Patrick Mahomes (+500) as the favorite to win the 2021-22 NFL MVP award immediately following the 2020-2021 Super Bowl.

Latest NFL Odds Updates

  • Teams with new head coaches began offseason training activities on April 2. The Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Chargers, and Washington Commanders opened OTAs on April 2. The New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers, and Seattle Seahawks will start on April 8. Teams with returning coaches can start on April 15.
  • Many states allow sportsbooks to post 2024 NFL Draft odds. This season’s three-day event takes place April 25-27 in Detroit.
  • NFL game odds will start to appear in mid-May when the NFL schedule is set. The NFL schedule release date hasn’t been announced yet. Based on past patterns, look for the slate on or about May 9. Sportsbooks will post game odds right away, and NFL futures odds may change a little.

Live NFL Odds: In-Game NFL Betting

Live betting, aka in-play betting, allows you to wager on a game that’s already in progress. In-game/live betting lines can change every few seconds, as the sportsbook can adjust the odds after every play.

Many legal online sportsbooks offer NFL odds for live betting. For example, you can find all available live markets at DraftKings Sportsbook by clicking on the “Live In-Game” tab from the main lobby.

Clicking on that tab brings up all available in-play bets at a given time. You can toggle between sports on the horizontal menu below the “Live In-Game” tab.

While human bookmakers set most of the lines at a sportsbook, the rapidly changing live betting lines are calculated by computer algorithms.

Keep in mind broadcast delays can make live NFL betting more difficult.

NFL Odds: Prop Bets

NFL player props offer wagers on player statistics, awards, and even where a player is selected in the NFL Draft. For instance, a typical NFL player prop on statistics could come as a bet on whether a superstar running back like San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey will rush for over 100 yards in a game.

The Super Bowl brings out novelty bets like the coin flip or the color of the sports drink bath for the winning coach. That will vary from state to state. Sportsbooks will only display legal betting options based on where you are when you place the bet.

How to Line Shop for NFL Odds

More than two dozen states now offer legal online sports betting. Regulated mobile sports betting apps offer the chance to shop for NFL odds from anywhere within a legal state.

The best NFL betting strategies involve shopping for lines across multiple different online sportsbooks. The NFL game picks you’re looking for might be available at more player-friendly odds at some sportsbooks vs. others.

The US Sports Betting section here at Gaming Today presents an exhaustive outline of which online sportsbooks are legal in which states. You can use Gaming Today as a resource to compare the welcome bonuses, user experience, and quality of the different legal sports betting apps available to US bettors.

How To Bet on NFL Odds at Legal Sportsbooks

Before you can put Gaming Today’s NFL betting tips to the test and grab the best NFL odds, you must sign up for at least one (or more than one) online sportsbook account. The steps to making your first legal mobile sports bet include the following:

  1. Find an online sportsbook – Check out the best sports betting apps for the latest on promotions, betting markets, and online sportsbook launches across the US.
  2. Claim a welcome bonus – Check in with Gaming Today for updated promo codes for each legal US online sportsbook. These promo codes unlock the welcome bonuses at the sportsbook.
  3. Register for a new account – Most sportsbooks require first and last names along with a valid email address to sign up for a new account. You’ll need additional proof of age and identity to make your first deposit.
  4. Make your first deposit – Once the sportsbook verifies your identification documents, you’ll enjoy access to several different remote deposit options. Some of the most reliable deposit methods include ACH/eCheck, PayPal, and the Play+ Prepaid card.
  5. Download a mobile sportsbook app – Most legal online sportsbooks offer their platforms as Apple iOS and Android apps. Apple device owners can find sportsbook apps in the App Store, while Android users can download apps directly from a sportsbook’s website. The Google Play store recently approved legal gambling apps, but it might take a while for the top US sportsbook brands to get their apps on the Google Play menu.
  6. Place bets – Legal online sportsbooks offer comprehensive selections of sports and ways to bet. Online sports bets require just a couple of clicks for the wager to appear on your betslip. Once you’ve inputted how much you want to bet on a particular line, confirm the wager on the betslip and send it through to the sportsbook.
  7. Bet Tracking – The practice of tabulating your betting history. Advanced bet Tracking for sports betting is essential because numbers are king. Properly Monitoring and tracking your bets makes you gambling royalty. Sports gamblers, novices, and veterans alike are guaranteed to improve their game with this simple hack.

Bonus Offers for NFL Betting

Deposit Match Bonus – A deposit match bonus matches a percentage of your first deposit with bonus betting credits. DraftKings, for example, gives players a 20% deposit match up to $1,250 as a welcome bonus.

Bonus Bet – A bonus bet refunds your first bet at an online sportsbook if it loses up to a certain amount. You’ll receive the value of your initial bet back as site credits if your initial wager is unsuccessful.

Referral Bonus – Bringing your friends to an online sportsbook can sometimes put money in your pocket. Some sportsbooks offer bonus bet credits for every player you get to sign up for a new account.
