Looking Ahead to Stanley Cup Finals

All eight Stanley Cup quarterfinals teams are capable of winning the Cup, so it’s no surprise that the playoffs are providing tremendous hockey. And, there is promise of the best is yet to come.

With such talent and skill, the Stanley Cup finals, no matter the matchup, could potentially be a series to remember. Do you like the high-powered Edmonton Oilers vs. the New York Rangers? Or, the Florida Panthers vs. the Dallas Stars? With so many great teams, the potential is there for a great show.

As of Wednesday, no quarterfinal team has clinched its series. Here’s where each series stands with odds from DraftKings:

Eastern Conference

New York Rangers (+500) Lead Carolina Hurricanes (+1000), 3-2

The Hurricanes lost the first three games of the series but won Game 4 at home and Game 5 in New York, with the Hurricanes rallying in the third period. Game 6 is at Raleigh on Thursday night. A Carolina win on Thursday will force a winner-take-all Game 7 in New York on Saturday. If the series goes to seven games, the Rangers are 8-1 in those deciding games at Madison Square Garden.

Florida Panthers (+260) Lead Boston Bruins (+2800), 3-2

The Panthers could have closed out the Bruins at home on Tuesday but lost, 2-1. This series has been nasty with star players fighting each other and team skirmishes at the end of games. Game 6 is Friday in Boston. If the Bruins win Game 6, and a seventh game is needed, it will be played in Florida, where the Panthers are 0-1 in deciding games.

For more intrigue, Florida, as the eighth seed, eliminated the Bruins in seven games last year, winning 3-2 in Boston.

Western Conference

Dallas Stars (+240, the NHL’s Shortest Odds) Lead Colorado Avalanche (+4000), 3-1

After losing Game 1, the Stars have dominated the Avalanche. Dallas won Game 3 in Denver, 4-1, and Game 4 in Denver, 5-1. Dallas has outscored high-scoring Colorado, 17-9. The Stars are scoring at 33 percent on the power play and killing penalties at an 80 percent rate. The Stars’ playoff run started with two home losses to defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas. But the Stars have been outstanding since, eliminating Vegas in seven games. Game 5 is Wednesday at Dallas. If the series gets to a seventh game, Dallas is 5-3 in Game 7s at home.

The Stars have a balanced team with quality scoring, goaltending, and special teams. If they close out Colorado on Wednesday, they will get some much-needed rest and that could be an enormous factor moving forward.

Vancouver Canucks (+1800) Are Tied With Edmonton Oilers (+500), 2-2

Each team has won a game on the road. The Oilers are heavily favored even though Vancouver holds home-ice advantage. Edmonton’s power play has been almost unstoppable, converting 46.7 percent of the time with a man advantage. The second-best power play is Dallas at 33 percent.

Vancouver has hung in behind the outstanding goaltending of third-stringer Arturs Silovs, who is 4-3 with a 2.71 goals-against average. Sportsbooks like the Oilers, whose two stars are warming up. Leon Draisaitl had eight goals and 12 assists, and Connor McDavid has two goals and 16 assists.

Game 5 is Thursday in Vancouver, with Game 6 in Edmonton on Saturday.

If a deciding game is necessary, Vancouver is 4-3 in Game 7s at home.

What Kind of NHL Bets Can You Make?

Futures: When you bet on the Stanley Cup champion, it is called a futures bet. This is a wager on the long-term outcome of the NHL playoffs. Other futures bets include selecting the division winner (the NHL has four divisions: Metropolitan, Atlantic, Central, and Pacific). You can bet on the conference winner (Metropolitan and Atlantic divisions are in the Eastern Conference; Central and Pacific divisions are in the Western Conference.) You can also bet on individual awards, including the Hart Trophy (league MVP), Art Ross Trophy (NHL’s leading scorer), and others.

Props: You can wager on the number of goals and points a particular player will score in a game (Over/Under), and the number of points a team will accumulate during the regular season (Over/Under). There are dozens of other props available for single games (Over/Under shots, first goal scorer, etc.), and season-long props, including odds to make the playoffs.

Game Bet: You can bet on individual games and NHL playoff odds with a spread (you either get or give a goal) and the total number of goals scored (Over/Under). Moneyline bets are most common in the NHL, allowing bettors to pick the winner of any game.

Parlays: Parlay bets offer multiple wagers on the same ticket. A bettor can select a team to win, a player to score, and an Over/Under for goals. The payout odds increase with each bet, but your parlay bets (legs) must be correct for your bet slip to win. If you get one wrong, you lose the parlay.

NHL and Stanley Cup Betting Strategies

Everyone has their own betting strategy. Some will have more detailed, intricate plans than others. Some may have no real plan, which is OK. But the basis of every strategy should involve a few things:

  • Set limits and stick to them.
  • Stay calm and do not overreact to anything.
  • Listen to your friends and the “experts” all you want, but always do your own homework (which is also a must).
  • If you are going to be drinking, place your bets first. That way, you can make decisions with a clear head and mind.
  • Do not bet money you do not have or cannot afford to lose.
