Thanksgiving weekend in America is the traditional National Hockey League regular season quarter-pole. It’s an excellent time to check the Stanley Cup odds and where teams stand.
Championships aren’t decided in the first quarter of the season. The NHL plays 82 regular-season games, a long season by anyone’s definition. To win the Stanley Cup, a team has to win 16 playoff games, usually hard-fought and physical, to skate around with the Cup proudly over your head.
While teams don’t win championships in November, they can set the stage for future success. Stanley Cup championship odds fluctuate during the season, and betting value can be acquired by keeping tabs on specific teams and having faith in their future.
Favorites for the 2024 Stanley Cup include the recent champion Colorado Avalanche, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Boston Bruins. The last team with the best regular-season record to win the Stanley Cup was the 2012-13 Chicago Blackhawks.

Boston Bruins: League’s Biggest Surprise
The season’s biggest surprise continues to be Boston, which we wrote about last week. The Bruins remain co-favorites at +800 (Best Live Odds: ). Boston had the eighth-best Stanley Cup odds at +1400 going into the season. The Bruins are 14-3-3 for 31 points, tied for the Eastern Conference lead with the New York Rangers.
Stanley Cup Betting Favorites
Current odds favorites to win the NHL Stanley Cup include the Golden Knights, Avalanche, and Hurricanes.
Colorado Avalanche ()
Colorado was the preseason favorite at +900 with Carolina. The Avalanche remains the Stanley Cup championship favorite at +800 (Best Live Odds: ) with the Boston Bruins. The Avalanche is 14-6-0 for 28 points — first in the Central Division and fourth overall, two points behind Vegas.
Colorado has played up to form and defenseman Cale Makar is second in the league in scoring with 30 points (behind Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes’ 33 points). As Makar goes, so goes the Colorado offense and defense. Colorado won the 2022 Stanley Cup. Over the weekend, the Denver Post published a story on Makar, declaring him a serious contender for the Norris Trophy (top defenseman) and Hart Trophy (league MVP).
Carolina Hurricanes ()
Carolina has dropped to the fourth choice at +1000 (Best Live Odds: ), tied with the New York Rangers and Dallas. The Hurricanes had a sluggish start (12-8-0) but the elements for Stanley Cup success remain in place. Carolina suffered an embarrassing, 8-2 loss at home to rival Tampa Bay on Friday, losing to a goalie, Andrei Vasilevskiy, who hadn’t played a game since April after surgery for a herniated disc. Tampa Bay scored its eight goals on 14 shots.
There is plenty of time for the Hurricanes to straighten out but performances like Friday’s might linger.
Toronto Maple Leafs ()
Toronto also opened the season at +1000 and currently is seventh at +1200 (Best Live Odds: ). The Maple Leafs are playing good hockey at 10-6-3. Expect Toronto to be in the hunt in the spring. The Maple Leafs are fourth in the Eastern Conference in goals with 67 in 19 games. But Toronto has allowed 66 goals. A tighter defensive posture could spell success for the Maple Leafs through the season.
Stanley Cup Value Picks and Longshots
Edmonton Oilers ()
Edmonton, the third preseason choice at +1000, has been the NHL’s most disappointing team. The Oilers have the eighth-best odds at +1400 (Best Live Odds: ), which might be based on reputation and reigning league MVP Connor McDavid more than actual results.
The Oilers are 7-12-1 for 15 points, the fourth-fewest in the league. Edmonton has the third-worst goals-against percentage among the league’s 32 teams at 3.70. The league leader is the New York Rangers at 2.32. The Oilers reportedly are in the market for a goaltender but their problems aren’t only in goal. Edmonton, while talented, might be a team to stay away from if you’re interested in a long-range bet.
New Jersey Devils ()
New Jersey also was the third preseason pick at +1000. The Devils had to deal with a basketful of injuries. They are 28th in defense, allowing 3.63 goals per game. The injured players are slowly returning to the lineup and you can expect New Jersey’s 9-9-1 record to improve. The Devils’ current Stanley Cup odds are seventh in the league at +1200 (Best Live Odds: ).

What Kind of NHL Bets Can You Make?
Futures: When you bet on the Stanley Cup champion, it is called a futures bet. This is a wager on the long-term outcome of the NHL playoffs. Other futures bets include selecting the division winner (the NHL has four divisions: Metropolitan, Atlantic, Central, and Pacific). You can bet on the conference winner (Metropolitan and Atlantic divisions are in the Eastern Conference; Central and Pacific divisions are in the Western Conference.) You can also bet on individual awards, including the Hart Trophy (league MVP), Art Ross Trophy (NHL’s leading scorer), and others.
Props: You can wager on the number of goals and points a particular player will score in a game (Over/Under), and the number of points a team will accumulate during the regular season (Over/Under). There are dozens of other props available for single games (Over/Under shots, first goal scorer, etc.), and season-long props, including odds to make the playoffs.
Game Bet: You can bet on individual games with a spread (you either get or give a goal) and the total number of goals scored (Over/Under). Moneyline bets are most common in the NHL, allowing bettors to pick the winner of any game.
Parlays: Parlay bets offer multiple wagers on the same ticket. A bettor can select a team to win, a player to score, and an Over/Under for goals. The payout odds increase with each bet, but your parlay bets (legs) must be correct for your bet slip to win. If you get one wrong, you lose the parlay.

NHL and Stanley Cup Betting Strategies
Everyone has their own betting strategy. Some will have more detailed, intricate plans than others. Some may have no real plan, which is OK. But the basis of every strategy should involve a few things:
- Set limits and stick to them.
- Stay calm and do not overreact to anything.
- Listen to your friends and the “experts” all you want, but always do your own homework (which is also a must).
- If you are going to be drinking, place your bets first. That way, you can make decisions with a clear head and mind.
- Do not bet money you do not have or cannot afford to lose.
