DraftKings has confirmed plans to launch its online sportsbook and casino products in Alberta on July 13, the scheduled opening day of the province’s regulated iGaming market, pending final regulatory approval.

The company will celebrate its arrival with a 2026 FIFA World Cup watch party and a volunteer event benefiting Food Banks Alberta, supported by a $150,000 donation.

FanDuel also announced community initiatives ahead of launch, including an $80,000 donation to the Canadian Red Cross, as operators look to establish a local presence beyond promotional offers.

Alberta online gambling launches after years of planning

Alberta’s transition to a competitive online gambling market has been years in the making. The province is replacing Play Alberta’s monopoly with a regulated framework that allows private operators to compete under provincial oversight.

Several major brands, including DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and theScore Bet, are expected to launch when the market opens July 13, provided they receive the necessary approvals.

DraftKings brings sportsbook and online casino to Alberta

At launch, eligible Alberta residents will have access to DraftKings Sportsbook and DraftKings Casino, featuring:

  • Online sports betting
  • Online slots and table games
  • Live dealer games

The Alberta online sports betting and casino launch would become DraftKings’ second Canadian province after Ontario and its 34th regulated North American jurisdiction.

In a press release, DraftKings Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports Greg Karamitis said the timing coincides with the FIFA World Cup, providing an opportunity to introduce the platform during one of the year’s biggest sporting events.

Regulated online gambling offers stronger player protection

Legal online casinos in Alberta are expected to give players more consumer protections than unregulated offshore gambling sites, including oversight, responsible gambling tools and access to licensed operators.

With multiple major brands entering the market simultaneously, competition is also expected to drive a wide range of introductory promotions and product offerings as operators compete for early market share.
