The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in online casinos marks a transformative era in online gambling, particularly in data analysis and automation.
Industry experts increasingly recognize AI’s potential to optimize various aspects of online gaming, especially in gameplay personalization and responsible gaming.
Jared Thau, CEO of Gameverse Interactive Corp., a game development company, emphasized AI’s impact on slot machines, which account for nearly all of US online casino revenue.
In a Forbes column, Thau wrote:
“The most significant change to slot-machine design in decades has been incorporating predictive artificial intelligence (AI) into the machine software. Over just a few short years, this has enabled casinos to gain insights into their customers’ behavior, preferences, and trends that were previously unavailable. As a result, predictive AI has enabled casinos to provide personalized gaming experiences, helping ensure optimal profits and promoting responsible gambling.”
Personalized user experiences can boost loyalty
Online casino operators are discovering that AI plays a pivotal role in fostering customer loyalty. By collecting data on individual players, AI identifies preferences and habits, crafting tailored gaming experiences.
This personalization not only enhances player satisfaction but also increases operator revenue.
“Highly personalized gaming experiences provide higher levels of player satisfaction and loyalty, meaning they’re more likely to revisit and spend more time and money on the gaming floor,” Thau said. “By creating a truly unique experience for each player and providing them with interactivity that makes them feel the casino ‘knows them,’ predictive AI can boost both satisfaction and revenues.”
AI also enhances online VIP and loyalty programs. As fintech law firm Gofaizen & Sherle noted, optimizing loyalty programs improves lifetime returns for casinos.
“Casino operators can use AI to analyze player activity and optimize reward systems, making VIP statuses more accessible and attractive,” the firm stated. “This helps to increase loyalty and extend customer lifetime value.”
Responsible gaming measures can identify problem patterns
AI’s ability to process real-time data and implement targeted actions has significant implications for responsible gambling.
The International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR) highlighted that AI enables real-time assessment of metrics indicating problem gambling, such as frequent deposits, significant increases in bet amounts, or extended gambling sessions without breaks.
“By recognizing these patterns, AI can prompt interventions, such as automated alerts encouraging individuals to take breaks, temporarily restricting access to high-stakes games, setting betting limits, providing educational resources about safer gambling, and directing individuals to professional support,” the IAGR stated.
Ethical concerns over AI’s use in online casinos?
However, using AI to monitor problem gambling in iGaming raises ethical questions: How can a system that delivers personalized promotions and game suggestions also protect players?
The IAGR noted, “For example, AI can trigger a targeted nudge after a losing streak that offers a limited-time promotion if another bet is placed within a certain timeframe. This can lead to individuals spending more money than they can afford to lose.”
The solution, according to the IAGR, lies in operators finding a balance between leveraging AI for revenue growth and protecting at-risk players from problem gambling.
