In an effort to combat gambling addiction, the Arizona Department of Gaming has introduced “Take Back the Game,” a public service initiative highlighting the state’s self-exclusion program.
The campaign features digital, television, and radio spots to raise awareness about the program, which allows Arizonans to opt out of all gambling establishments, event wagering, and fantasy sports apps.
PSAs educate Arizonans on self-exclusion
The 30-second responsible gambling PSAs are available in English and Spanish. They feature a live demonstration of the self-exclusion process at the Department of Gaming, emphasizing that the procedure is quick, efficient, and conducted in a supportive environment.
During a self-exclusion visit, residents can elect a one-, five-, or 10-year ban. These restrictions can apply to physical gambling establishments, fantasy sports apps, or both.
Expanding protections for Arizonans
Arizona Department of Gaming Director Jackie Johnson described the initiative as a celebration of empowerment:
“Arizona first launched a voluntary self-exclusion program in the early 2000s as a tool for residents to opt out of visiting tribal casinos if they decided gambling was negatively impacting their well-being,” Johnson said in an ADG press release.
“Later, the department expanded the program to include event wagering and fantasy sports. Today, with the ‘Take Back the Game’ campaign, our agency affirms the value of self-exclusion as an empowering, practical tool that has positive impacts for thousands of Arizonans.”
Measurable impact on responsible gaming
Since its inception, more than 11,900 Arizonans have joined the program; there are currently 2,500 active self-exclusions.
In addition to the ‘Take Back the Game’ campaign, the department has also produced PSAs to educate consumers on the illegality of online casinos in Arizona and the risks of underage gambling.
