Arizona is adding a new layer to how it helps residents struggling with problem gambling, focusing on an element often missing from traditional treatment: lived experience. The Arizona Department of Gaming has awarded its first-ever peer support and recovery services contract, paving the way for a statewide program built on connection, trust, and accessibility.
After a competitive request-for-proposal process, the contract was awarded to Dezerve Counseling LLC, which will design and operate Arizona’s first dedicated peer support program for problem gambling. The services will be free, confidential, and available to anyone in the state who needs help.
Recovery through lived experience
Peer support takes a different approach than conventional treatment. Participants are paired with an experienced Peer Support and Recovery Specialist rather than meeting with a clinician. These specialists have either personally experienced problem gambling recovery or have helped a loved one through it.
Having a shared background can make conversations feel less intimidating and more candid. While adhering to professional standards and peer support best practices, specialists offer practical guidance and support without judgment.
State officials say the program is meant to complement existing treatment options, not replace them, giving individuals another way to engage when clinical care feels like too big a first step.
Accessible, free help for Arizonans
Accessibility is a key advantage of the new program. Participants can meet in person, connect virtually, or speak by phone anywhere in the state. One-on-one assistance or group sessions will be available, all led by qualified specialists.
Participation is free, insurance is not required, and individuals do not need to be receiving treatment to take part. First-time participants will be welcomed with the same warmth as those already working with a doctor or counselor.
By removing common barriers, the program makes it easier for people to seek help before their problems worsen.
Sustainable recovery solutions
The initiative is not only about helping people now but also preparing Arizona for the future. Dezerve Counseling will hire and train Peer Support and Recovery Specialists, strengthening the state’s long-term capacity to address problem gambling.
The Division of Problem Gambling aims to create a sustainable system that can adapt to changing gambling trends and rising demand for support. Training individuals with lived experience establishes a pipeline of experts who can make both an immediate and lasting impact.
After recruitment and training, the peer support and recovery program is expected to launch in spring 2026.
