2024 Bookies Battle Playoffs: New Leader After NFL Championship Round

After the NFL championship games, the Gaming Today’s Bookies Battle playoff race had a new lone leader. Michael Piranio (Mandalay Bay) correctly picked the points with the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions and moved to 8-4. Four players remain in contention for the $2,000 prize.

Brian Edwards (Palace Station), Mike Ayala (New York New York), Scott Gringauz (Circa), and Tim Nortz (Northern Quest) are all tied for second place with a 7-5 record. Let’s break down the games, the results from the bookies remaining, and what will take shape for the final pick and game of the contest.

Results and Standings After NFL Championship Round

The Kansas City Chiefs won an ugly 17-10 affair against the Baltimore Ravens. Not only did the Chiefs cover the field goal and a hook, but they outright won. The offense hasn’t looked right most of the season, but the Chiefs defense stepped up to rattle Lamar Jackson and the rest of the Ravens.

It looked like the Detroit Lions would pull off another upset, but a second-half collapse allowed the San Francisco 49ers to take a 34-31 victory. Dan Campbell’s aggressive play calling will be under scrutiny after passing on two field goal attempts and failing to convert on fourth down both times. While the 49ers won, they did not cover the seven-point spread in our contest.

Here are the full results from our contestant picks:

  • Michael (8-4): Picked KC and DET
  • Brian E. (7-5): Picked KC and SF
  • Mike (7-5): Picked KC and DET
  • Scott (7-5): Picked BAL and SF
  • Tim (7-5): Picked BAL and DET
  • Kenny (6-6): Picked KC and SF
  • Nick (6-6): Picked BAL and SF
  • Atif (5-7): Picked BAL and SF
  • Louie (4-6): No picks
  • Brian M. (3-7): No picks
  • Duane (3-9): Picked BAL and SF

Scott had the lead after the first two weeks of the playoffs, but picked the Ravens and 49ers to cover. This paved the way for Michael to take the lead, correctly picking the Chiefs and the Lions. Mike was the only other contestant to pick both teams correctly, staying in the race.

Both consensus picks were for the home teams (BAL 56%, SF 67%) among the nine contestants submitting picks. A total of four bookies picked both home teams. Two contestants out of the running did not submit picks before the games.

Super Bowl 58 Contest Odds and Tiebreaker

With a one-pick lead in hand, if Michael Piranio selects the correct side of the Super Bowl, they’ll win the $2,000 award. If not, that opens the door for the remaining four bookies.

The contest spread for Super Bowl 58 is 49ers -1.5. Bookies can submit their picks from now until Friday, Feb. 9, at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Should there be a tie at the top of the standings after the Super Bowl, a tiebreaker is in place to determine the outright winner. Bookies will submit a total number of points they think will be scored in the game, along with their spread pick. The contestant closest to the actual amount will win the prize.

Good luck to the contestants!
