New York today released the names of the companies vying to be sports betting operators in the Big Apple’s up-and-coming mobile sportsbook market.

There are 14 operator hopefuls on the list, 10 of which are also applying to be the sports betting platform through which bets are placed. All platforms and operators fall under six bidding groups competing for control of New York’s $1 billion-plus sports betting market under their proprietary or partner brands.

The primary applicants for those six groups are bet365, Kambi, Betfair dba FanDuel, FOX Bet, and theScore Bet. Only Kambi has submitted two bids, both with Kambi as the platform provider.

Below are the companies applying to be both platform provider and operator under a single license, and platform providers vying for a license or licenses under a different operator or operators.

Only two applicants are bidding to operate a platform with more than one operator (Kambi and PointsBet New York). All other platform provider hopefuls would be linked with a single operator.

  • Platform: PointsBet
  • Operators: PointsBet and Empire Resorts, Inc. dba Resorts World

Competitors By The Numbers

Exactly how much each company has bid for a chance to compete for the minimum of two platform providers and four operator slots that will be filled by the New York State Gaming Commission in coming months is big news, but that information hasn’t been made public. Bid amounts were redacted in the application copies released today by the NYSGC.

What is easier to determine is the amount of licensing fees that the state could receive based on the applications. For a minimum of two platform providers, the state would receive $50 million based on the required $25 million licensing fee from each approved mobile sports wagering platform licensee. If all 12 platform applicants are awarded licenses, the total revenue would be $300 million.

At least $50 million of that total would come from Kambi, which would be required to pay $25 million for each successful bid should it decide to be licensed under both.

All licensing fees will have to be paid before mobile sports wagering can begin under any one provider, according to the NYSGC, with payment due within 30 days after licensing is approved.

More in-depth financials should become public closer to Dec. 6 — the deadline for selection of mobile sports wagering licensees by the NYSGC.
