North Carolina March Madness Odds: Tar Heels Futures & Betting Lines

The North Carolina Tar Heels don’t enter the NCAA Tournament with quite as much momentum as they had prior to a loss to NC State in the ACC Tournament final, but coach Hubert Davis’ team remains a Final Four contender after winning eight of its last nine entering the Big Dance.

UNC, No. 4 in the AP Top 25, earned a No. 1 seed in the West region by winning the ACC regular season and reaching the final of the conference tournament. Carolina will open the tournament on Thursday against the winner of the First Four matchup between No. 16 seeds Howard and Wagner. The Heels’ top competition in the West includes 2-seed Arizona, 3-seed Baylor, and 4-seed Alabama.

UNC Odds to Win March Madness 2024 & Implied Probability

The Tar Heels, whose odds to win the national title are currently as long as 17-to-1 (+1700) at FanDuel, started the season at 25-to-1 (+2500) to win it all. North Carolina dominated the ACC throughout the regular season, with a record of 17-3 in conference play, including two wins over Duke.

Entering the NCAA Tournament, just four teams’ odds are shorter than Carolina’s: Connecticut, Houston, Purdue, and Arizona. The Wildcats, of course, are led by former Tar Heel Caleb Love. The NCAA Tournament Committee’s placement of Arizona as the 2-seed in the same region as UNC could set up a must-see Elite Eight clash between the Heels and the Love-led Wildcats.

UNC Futures Odds Analysis

Carolina has the star power, strength in the frontcourt, and balance to make a run. Guard RJ Davis won ACC Player of the Year, veteran big man Armando Bacot averages a double-double (14 points and 10 rebounds per game), and forward Harrison Ingram gives the Heels an imposing rebounder and quality shooter.

Cormac Ryan, Elliot Cadeau, and Seth Trimble round out a solid rotation that made UNC one of the few teams in the country with a top-40 rating in both offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency. UNC has not only won eight of its last nine games but done so in dominant fashion, with four of those wins coming by at least 10 points.

As for UNC’s potential opponents beyond whoever it faces in its tournament opener, the second round would bring a matchup against either 8-seed Mississippi State or 9-seed Michigan State. The former reached the semifinals of the SEC Tournament with a romp over regular season SEC champ Tennessee last Friday that showed what a dangerous underdog they could be against UNC. Meanwhile, the Spartans are led by one of the best coaches in the sport, Tom Izzo, and boast a roster full of former elite recruits, but struggled to a 19-14 (10-10 Big 10) record on the season.

Should Carolina reach the Sweet 16, it would likely face 5-seed Saint Mary’s or 4-seed Alabama. The possible opponents in a hypothetical trip to the Elite 8 include 2-seed Arizona, 3-seed Baylor, and 6-seed Clemson (though it’s worth noting that the Tigers are underdogs in their NCAAT opener against 11-seed New Mexico).

North Carolina Tar Heels Game Odds

UNC’s first-round opponent will not be known until after the First Four game between Wagner and Howard on Tuesday night. Once Carolina’s opponent is revealed, the line for Thursday’s game will likely be set shortly after.
