So is it eight or nine?
New York has issued nine online licences. Most current lists show eight live apps. Resorts World Bet appears as the ninth in some lists. Older pages also mention ESPN Bet, which is now theScore Bet, and WynnBET, which left the state. If an app is not on a state-licensed list, treat it as unlicensed.
The Rules That Catch New Yorkers Out
- You must be 21 or older. There are no exceptions for sportsbooks.
- You must be physically in New York. Apps use geolocation. A New York account will not work if you cross into New Jersey or Connecticut, and a New Jersey account will not work in Manhattan.
- New York college teams are off the board. You cannot bet on college teams based in New York State, or on college events played in the state, even when the teams come from elsewhere.

Why New York Is Different
New York has the highest tax on online sportsbooks in the country. Operators pay 51% of their gross gaming revenue, against 10% for the state’s retail sportsbooks. Mobile betting launched on 8 January 2022 and is regulated by the New York State Gaming Commission.

What Is Not Legal in New York
- Online casinos. There are no licensed online casinos in New York. An app offering you slots or blackjack for real money is not licensed here. Licensed online casinos exist in seven other states.
