Ohio Online Sports Betting Handle Up Nearly $40 Million in October

Online sports betting in Ohio saw a 4.7% month-over-month jump in handle in October.

FanDuel took the most bets in the month, the Ohio Casino Control Commission reported. Additionally, the month saw online Ohio sports betting handle jump 21.8% from last October to $881.7 million.

That growth is despite last October having five NFL betting Sundays compared to four this year.

Once again, DraftKings and FanDuel led the way in market share, accounting for more than 68% of the total handle generated in the Buckeye State.

The two books swapped places, however, with DraftKings’ share decreasing to 33.8% from 36.7% in September while FanDuel rose to 34.8% from 32.8%.

Emerging sportsbooks increase market share

The state’s middle-tier sportsbooks saw some interesting trends, with three brands increasing their market share in a competitive (and lucrative) online sports betting market:

  • Bet365: 8.2% market share, up 1.5% month on month
  • Fanatics: 4.7% market share, up 12% month on month
  • ESPN Bet: 3.2% market share, down 5.3% month on month

Despite ESPN Bet’s stumble, the three combined to account for a 16.2% market share in October after taking 15.7% in September.

Revenue takes a tumble

October’s handle numbers were strong, but revenue couldn’t follow suit. Online books saw their revenue tumble 21.8%, falling to $80.1 million in October.

That drop is from the well-documented customer-friendly NFL betting results throughout the month.

FanDuel managed to mitigate its losses well, posting an 11.8% downturn that was well under the average of 21.8%. DraftKings didn’t fare nearly as well, suffering a 31.3% monthly loss. Miami Valley Gaming and Racing’s MVGBet was the only sportsbook to post monthly revenue gains in October, rising 105.4%.
