MLB Futures Odds And How To Use The Best Sports Betting Apps

World Series odds change the slumps and the streaks. You can make an MLB World Series bet as we reach the 1/3 mark in the season. You can also plan a bet at the All-Star break, at the trade deadline or even when the playoff field is set.

Legal online sportsbooks and top sports betting apps have odds to win the World Series posted throughout the season, playoffs, and even the offseason.

Sportsbooks offer offseason MLB futures odds for the World Series Champion too. It’s worth a look even if snow is on the ground! Offseason odds factor in how teams performed during the previous season while taking the latest player transactions and injuries into consideration for each team.

Now that we’re playing games that count in 2023, each team’s hot streaks and cold snaps will cause a shift in both the standings and the MLB Futures Odds. Keep checking back — hopefully, you’ll catch the perfect timing to bet on the World Series Champion.

The Houston Astros won their second World Series title in 2022, capping off a brilliant 4-2 series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Of course, the logical question is can they pull off a repeat?

*World Series odds are updated daily*

Atlanta Braves (+450)

The NL East will be a tough one again in 2023. The Atlanta Braves have done a great job of locking up their young talent by signing them to affordable extensions. They lost one of 2023’s top free agents when SS Dansby Swanson signed with the Cubs. But they still feature a deep, well-rounded team with Max Fried, Spencer Strider and Charlie Morton toeing the mound. The batting order includes 1B Matt Olson, 3B Austin Riley and OF Robert Acuna Jr. so the Braves will be a tough out on anyone’s schedule. The Braves are a new favorite to win the World Series in part due to the slower starts by Philadelphia and the NY Mets.

Los Angeles Dodgers (+500)

Depending on your perspective MLB’s most loaded team was either too quiet or they employed a smart strategy to clear some payroll for big signings down the road. Either way, they’re in the lead pack for World Series odds.  The LA Dodgers are still loaded with Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and new addition JD Martinez who will take over Justin Turner’s DH duties. The rotation starts with Julio Urias and Clayton Kershaw. Tony Gonsolin wasn’t ready for Opening Day, but they still have Dustin May and newcomer Noah Syndergaard as well.

Tampa Bay Rays (+600)

A 30-9 start to the regular season does tend to help a team’s World Series odds. The Rays always seem ready to dip into their deep farm system and plug holes in their Major League roster. Wander Franco and Randy Arozarena will get a close look as rosters are set for the MLB All-Star Game. You may well names like Drew Rasmussen and Jeffrey Springs a well. Even setting the hot start aside, the Rays have been part of the last four postseason so expect them to be in it to win it.

Houston Astros (+650)

How do you like the Astros to repeat as World Series champions? The Astros added some power at 1B when they signed Jose Abreu from the White Sox to replace Yuli Gurriel in the offseason. Abreu is just part of a veteran lineup that includes OF Yordan Alvarez and 2B Jose Altuve as well. (Altuve missed a big piece of the spring, but he is on a rehab assignment. A pitch fractured his thumb in the World Baseball Classic.) Houston lost free agent Justin Verlander to the Mets so Framber Valdez and Cristian Javier will top the rotation in 2023. Add in a deep bullpen and the Astros have a great shot at winning the AL again in 2023.

New York Yankees (+1000)

Keeping free agent OF Aaron Judge in the Bronx was a top priority — and the Yankees held onto their captain with a massive new contract. Fellow slugger Anthony Rizzo is staying put, too. As for additions, the Yankees landed LHP Carlos Rodon in the offseason. He’s dealing with a forearm muscle strain and will start 2023 on the injured list. Once he’s healthy, Rodon and Gerrit Cole will be a potent 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.

New York Mets (+1500)

The Mets share the NL East with the Braves and the NL Champion Phillies. That may be the only thing keeping New York’s senior circuit team from enjoying shorter odds. They added two huge pieces when they opened the checkbook for Justin Verlander and Kodai Senga. They’ll join Max Scherzer in the rotation. The star pitchers will get plenty of run support from 1B Pete Alonso and SS Francisco Lindor as well. They’ll need to lean on new addition David Robertson to close out games after Edwin Diaz injured his right knee in the World Baseball Classic.

Texas Rangers (+1800)

The Astros are the defending champions, but the Texas Rangers are at the top of the AL West at the start of June. That means they are a rising team in the World Series odds as well. Rangers 2B Marcus Semien gets on base while OF Adolis Garcia leads the team in home runs and RBIs. Nathan Eovaldi, Martin Perez and Jon Gray lead a solid rotation as well.

Toronto Blue Jays (+1800)

The AL East is rugged, but if you are looking for a contender beyond the NY Yankees, baseball’s Canadian team might be a candidate. Of course, the conversation starts with star 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. But 3B Matt Chapman has put up big numbers early and SS Bo Bichette finds his way on base. They have a promising rotation anchored by Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios and Chris Bassitt as well. The Jays are ready to challenge the Yankees and Rays in the East.

San Diego Padres (+1900)

Whether it was last season’s trade deadline deal for Juan Soto or the offseason acquisition of Xander Bogaerts, expect the unexpected from the “small market” San Diego Padres. They reached the 2022 NLCS without help from star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. who missed all of last season with an injury and PED suspension. Tatis moved to RF this season. Starting April 20, he joined Manny Machado, Soto and Bogaerts in a batting order to be reckoned with. The team’s top sluggers haven’t gelled at the top of the batting order yet, so the Padres are playing .500 ball so far.

Minnesota Twins (+1900)

The AL Central has one team with a winning record as teams near the Memorial Day weekend. DraftKings likes the Minnesota Twins to be in the mix as the schedule moves toward Labor Day as well. Joey Gallo is beginning to show power. The team has a true ace in Sonny Gray. Shortstop Carlos Correa almost signed with the Giants. Then he almost signed with the Mets. In the end, Minnesota was happy to bring their star infielder back to Minneapolis.

How To Bet on World Series Futures

The Gaming Today Sports Betting Apps page lists the top legal online sportsbooks and states in which they operate.

The welcome bonus offers and features differ at each sportsbook, but you can use Gaming Today as your go-to resource for all things related to legal mobile sports betting.

Once you’ve chosen an online sportsbook, you’ll need to provide your name, the last four digits of your SSN, and a valid email address to register for an account.

Make Your First Deposit

Once you’ve registered for a new account, navigate to the “Cashier” or “Add Funds” tab at your chosen sportsbook to make your first deposit.

The most reliable deposit methods include PayPal and the Play+ Prepaid card. Other methods include ACH/eCheck and credit/debit cards.

Verify Your Location

Online sportsbooks use geolocation services to determine your location when you log in or try to place bets.

You must be located within a state that legally offers the online sportsbook of your choice in order to bet. If the geolocation technology detects that you’re outside of state limits, you’ll be blocked from betting until you’re within a legal jurisdiction.

Place Bets

Placing your first bet requires clicking on the line of your choice. Online sportsbooks offer a wide array of ways to bet, so be sure to check out the Gaming Today Sports Betting 101 page for details on all kinds of sports bets.

Once you’ve clicked on a bet you wish to make, the wager appears on your bet slip. Input the amount you want to wager in the bet slip and the sportsbook will display the potential payout.

When you’re ready to send the bet through to the sportsbook, click “Confirm” (or something similar), and your bet is in the books.

Cash Out

In general, the sportsbook only allows you to cash out using a method you’ve previously used to deposit.

PayPal, Play+, and ACH/eCheck all offer rapid turnaround on withdrawals. You can also visit the land-based casino partner of an online sportsbook (if the sportsbook partners with a retail casino) and make deposits and withdrawals at the cashier cage.

How World Series Odds are Calculated

US sportsbooks use American odds notation to display potential payouts on all bets. American odds lines are denoted by a “+” or “-“ in front of the odds.

For World Series futures odds, the lines are virtually always “+” American odds. Here’s what the futures odds on the 2023 World Series looked like at DraftKings as of May 2:

TeamOdds To Win The 2023 World Series
Atlanta Braves+450
LA Dodgers+500
Tampa Bay Rays+600
Houston Astros+650
New York Yankees+950
New York Mets+1500

Let’s calculate a hypothetical World Series futures bet on the favored Atlanta Braves. To calculate “+” American odds bets, you must divide the odds (+450) by 100 and multiply that by the amount wagered.

For example, a $50 bet on the Braves winning the 2023 World Series would calculate as (450/100)*$50, which solves to $225. A $50 winning bet on Atlanta would return $275 to the bettor ($225 profit plus the original $50 bet).

Losing bets simply result in losing the amount wagered in full. A $50 bet on the Braves would return $0 if Atlanta doesn’t win the World Series.

Houston started the season as the sportsbook favorite going into Spring Training, but the futures odd change significantly as the season progresses.

Injuries, trades, and unexpected success for teams that look like longshots in the preseason are all factors that can alter futures odds on the baseball championship.

Also, you don’t have to bet on an eventual champion. Here’s another example.

DraftKings has a “Mets to make the playoffs” bet for the current campaign. With 2/3 of the season still left, the Mets odds were:

  • Yes: -235
  • No: +190

At -235, you would need to bet $235 to win $100 on a bet for the Mets to make the playoffs. A correct +190 bet on the Mets to miss the playoffs means your $100 bet would yield $190.

You don’t have to bet in $100 amounts, of course. Gaming Today’s moneyline calculator can help you determine your potential winnings based on any amount you choose.

For instant American odds calculations, check out the Gaming Today Moneyline Calculator.

MLB World Series Odds And Betting

What is a World Series Futures Bet?

Futures bets allow you to wager on an event that incorporates a period longer than a single game. A World Series futures bet, for example, offers the chance to bet on the MLB champion at any time throughout the year.

No matter how far away the next World Series, legal online sportsbooks offer futures odds. As soon as the 2022 World Series ended, the books installed futures lines on the 2023 World Series.

Other examples of MLB futures markets include betting on player awards, division winners, and statistical leaders. BetRivers, for instance, offers Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Dylan Cease as the favorite to win the 2023 American League Cy Young award at (+700) odds as of late March.

Click here to go to the Gaming Today Futures Odds Calculator.

What Is A World Series Prop Bet?

A prop bet wagers on events other than the winner or loser of a game. Some prop bets involve on-field events, while others allow you to wager on events that don’t even happen during the World Series.

Examples of on-field prop bets include wagering on whether a World Series game will go to extra innings. BetMGM offered such a bet for Game 2 of the 2020 World Series, offering (+775) odds. The bet didn’t pay off, and none of the six games from the 2020 World Series went to extra innings.

Off-field prop bets, aka exotic props, could involve wagering on the length of the National Anthem before a game, or on the first beer brand to get a commercial on the air during a game. That can vary from state to state. Some jurisdictions don’t allow so-called “exotic bets” on off-the-field happenings.

Sportsbook do the research on that for you, so don’t worry. If the bet isn’t an option, you simply won’t see it when you log in at your specific location.

World Series Betting Strategies

For the World Series or any sporting event, favored teams generally pull more betting interest than underdogs. Sportsbooks inherently place better payout odds on the underdog.

A typical moneyline bet on the 2022 World Series going into Game 1 looked like this:

TeamOdds To Win Game 1 of 2022 World Series
Houston Astros-170
Philadelphia Phillies+143

Sharp bettors convert moneyline odds to implied probability, using a tool like the Gaming Today Implied Probability Calculator.

Inserting the Houston Astros (-170) moneyline odds into the calculator yields a 62.96% implied probability of winning. If you thought the Astros had better than a 62.96% chance of beating the Phillies in the World Series, the (-170) line offered value.

Another common betting strategy involves “fading the public,” or wagering against whatever most of the betting public is doing. This strategy essentially bets on the sportsbook’s long-term ability to win money, which wouldn’t happen if large sections of the public could always accurately place winning bets.

Middling, another possible betting approach, involves betting on one side of the moneyline, then hoping for the line to move enough to place a profitable wager on the other side of the bet.

For example, a bettor attempting to use the middling strategy could place a bet on Philadelphia (+143), then hope that the line on the Astros moves to (-150) or better. Placing a (+143) bet on the Phillies and a (-150) on the Astros would yield profit no matter who won the World Series game.

World Series Odds FAQ

Is betting on the World Series legal in the US?

Yes. About two-thirds of the 50 US states allow sports betting in some form. Most of those states offer legal online sports betting.

Some of the biggest online sports betting markets include New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Nevada, Indiana, Virginia, Tennessee and Colorado. States like New York, Ohio, Maryland and Massachusetts are among the more recent additions to the legal sports betting industry in the US.

Office pools and any betting on the World Series apart from legal sportsbooks are against the law.

Where can I bet on the World Series online?

Gaming Today’s top choices for online sports betting include BetRivers, FanDuel Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, BetMGM, PointsBet, and Caesars.

Be sure to check out our Best US Sports Betting Apps page for comprehensive reviews of each sportsbook and the states in which each operates.

How old do I need to be to bet on the World Series?

21 or older. With a couple of exceptions, the standard minimum betting age at legal online sportsbooks is 21.

Is it safe to wager on the World Series online?

Yes, as long as you’re betting at a state-regulated, legal sportsbook.

Legal online sportsbooks operate under the oversight of state-level government gaming regulatory agencies. Placing a bet at a legal online sportsbook offers the same level of safety as wagering at the sportsbook of a land-based casino.

Do online sportsbooks offer live betting during the World Series?

Yes. Live betting, aka in-play betting, allows you to wager on the game as it’s in progress.

Live betting lines rapidly change throughout the game, based on what’s happening on the field. Live betting is an online sportsbook specialty, available in some form at all of the top-rated mobile sportsbooks.

Can you make prop bets on the World Series?

Yes. Prop bets could include wagering on whether a particular player will hit a home run, how many innings a starting pitcher will last, and many other on-field props.

Prop betting isn’t just limited to on-field events in some cases.

Can I bet on events happening off the field?

Yes, but only in some cases. Off-field prop bets — also called exotic prop bets — can include all kinds of events that have nothing to do with what happens in a World Series game.

Off-field prop bets might involve betting on the length of the National Anthem, or whether a team’s last World Series win is mentioned during the broadcast.

Sportsbooks customize their betting options based on each state’s rules and regulations. An exotic bet at DraftKings Indiana might not be available at DraftKings Virginia, for example.

When is the 2023 World Series?

The 2023 MLB postseason is scheduled to start on Oct. 3. The World Series will tentatively start on Oct. 24 as long as the 2023 regular season remains on track.
