West Virginia Sports Betting: Best WV Sportsbooks

West Virginia Sports BettingWest Virginia sports betting is legal and available to residents. Nine online West Virginia sportsbook apps are currently available, with room for more to come.

West Virginia passed a law allowing online sportsbooks in December 2018. A few months later, the first WV sportsbook launched, but it was shut down amid disagreements with various stakeholders. Sports betting in West Virginia returned in earnest in August 2019, and the state is now one of the top legal markets.

Up to 15 sportsbooks can be licensed in West Virginia — three skins for each retail casino in the state. The state also welcomes other forms of online gambling, including horse race betting, Daily Fantasy Sports, and online casinos.

We have you covered if you’re on the hunt for the best West Virginia sports betting apps. We have tested and reviewed each app, highlighted the latest industry news, and revealed the hottest West Virginia sportsbook promos below.

BetRivers West Virginia

BetRivers is a top-notch sportsbook app and the welcome bonus presents an exciting opportunity, too.

BetRivers’ App Store and Google Play Store reviews might give you pause, but we’ve had overwhelmingly positive experiences with both offerings. We recommend BetRivers as a top betting app for beginner bettors in West Virginia, thanks to features like “Stats” and “Tips.” You can click either option to get more information on a team’s historic performance related to your betting market.

For example, the Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs “Stats” button summoned information about each team’s performance on moneyline, run line, and Over/Under bets. The feature is an excellent addition, and we like that it opens within the sportsbook app itself rather than a separate page or browser window.

At BetRivers, additional noteworthy app features for West Virginia bettors include localized WV sportsbook promos, Jai alai betting (which you can’t find anywhere else), and a responsive in-app live chat tool for assistance.

FanDuel Sportsbook West Virginia

The FanDuel Sportsbook app is considered one of the best West Virginia betting apps. It offers a terrific user experience in each market, West Virginia included. We tested and reviewed the FanDuel Sportsbook app to put this claim to the test, and FanDuel delivered.

FanDuel WV starts with a calming blue and white color palette, with striking greens on the buttons you might need to press — such as “Deposit” or “Make a Bet.”

The menus and options within the FanDuel app are all easily accessible and simple to interpret. Live games, promos, and leagues reside at the top of the home screen, with top promos, events, and offers in a carousel right below it. Scroll down further, and you’ll find popular Same Game Parlays (SGPs) and upcoming games for every major league and sport.

FanDuel makes the betting experience seamless, too. Click any odds to add a bet to your slip. FanDuel will display the line and your potential payout. You can place the bet then and there or add more to your slip to build a parlay or place single wagers. This ease of use extends throughout the FanDuel app, making it one of our favorite mobile sportsbooks in West Virginia.

The Fanatics perks and features keep coming from there. One of our favorite things about the app? FanCash. It’s the Fanatics rewards program. West Virginia bettors can convert FanCash into betting credits or spend it on sports merchandise from the Fanatics online store.

Fanatics delivers on the overall sports betting experience, too. The sportsbook presents games in an easily digestible format, while the categorization and search functions help bettors easily find the lines they’re looking for.

How To Bet on Sports in West Virginia

Ready to get started with West Virginia betting apps? Follow these simple steps and learn how to bet. West Virginia sportsbooks also let you explore their sites and odds without signing up. Take your time to find the right fit.

1

Choose a Sportsbook App

This step is one of the easiest because we’ve done most of the work for you. Read our reviews and check the welcome bonuses to decide which WV sportsbook is best for you.

2

Claim Welcome Bonus

This step might come at different points in the process, but this is the most common. When prompted, enter your WV sportsbook promo code.

3

Create an Account

Sign up for the sportsbook using the required personal details. Have a photo ID and your SSN handy; personal details are required to confirm your age and identity.

The app will also automatically install geolocation software to determine when you are within West Virginia’s state lines.

West Virginia does not require you to visit a retail casino to complete the registration process.

4

Download Your Sportsbook

Your downloading method will vary based on whether you use Android or Apple iOS devices.

If you have an iOS device:

  • Type the name of your chosen sportsbook into the App Store’s search bar. Once you locate it, download the sportsbook. Be sure to download the correct app for your state. With FanDuel, for example, search for the FanDuel Sportsbook app, not the Daily Fantasy Sports app.

If you have an Android device:

  • Visit the website for your sportsbook of choice. Gambling apps cannot be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
  • After finding the sportsbook page, look for a “download for Android” or similar page.
  • Download the mobile app using your Android device through the website.
  • You may need to give a .apk file permission to install on your phone.

Either way, installation of the mobile app should begin automatically once you download it to your mobile device.

5

Deposit Funds

This step is important because most sportsbooks require a minimum deposit to get the welcome bonus. Read the terms and conditions, then make your first qualifying deposit.

6

Place First Bet

Find a sport, league, or game you wish to bet on. Add the bet to your betslip (usually as easy as clicking it or tapping it), then type in the amount you want to wager and click “place bet.”

Types of Bets at WV Sportsbooks

West Virginia sportsbooks offer a plethora of bet types and markets. Below, we’ll cover some of the most common wagers you can place in the state.

Moneyline bets are simple: bet on a team to win a particular game or match. The odds might look like this:

  • Cleveland Guardians +154
  • Philadelphia Phillies -184

The important thing to know about moneyline bets (and odds in general) is this: a plus (+) sign in front of the odds means the team is the underdog. A minus (-) symbol means the team is the favorite to win. This then determines the payouts. With the odds above, a $100 winning bet on the Guardians would pay $154 (plus your initial bet back). Meanwhile, a $184 bet on the Phillies would pay $100 (plus your initial bet). In other words, betting on the favorite will pay out less.

Point spread betting is where the term “cover” comes from. If you hear bettors talking about “covering the spread,” they’re talking about these bet types. Point spreads give the underdog a phantom point advantage and the favorite a handicap. Here’s an example from the NFL:

  • New England Patriots +9 (-105)
  • Cincinnati Bengals -9 (-115)

The +9 and -9 is the “line” on this bet. Essentially, it means the Bengals are expected to beat the Pats by 9-ish points. If the final score sees the Bengals beat the Patriots by more than 9 points, they cover the spread, and that bet wins. If the Patriots 1) win straight-up or 2) lose by fewer than 9 points, they cover the spread and bets on them win.

Totals are also known as Over/Under betting. These bets don’t involve picking a team to win. Instead, you decide whether the teams will combine for more points or fewer than the line set by the sportsbook. Here’s an example from the same NFL game we used above.

  • New England Patriots vs. Cincinnati Bengals
    • Over 42.5 (-115)
    • Under 42.5 (-105)

Totals bets are all about points. It doesn’t matter which team scores them. The only thing that matters is whether the two competitors combine for more or less than the line, which is 42.5 in the example above.

You would bet on the Over if you think the Bengals and Patriots will total more than 42.5 points, while you would bet on the Under if you think the end-of-game total will be less than 42.5.

Totals bets are a nice way to get engaged with a game, even if you don’t have much interest in the teams taking the field.

Prop bets are wagers on a specific occurrence within a game, not necessarily tied to the final score. For example, you might bet on a certain NBA player to log a certain number of assists. Or you can bet on an MLB player to hit a home run. Here are a few props we saw at WV sportsbooks at the time of writing:

  • Brandon Lowe to hit a home run (+390)
  • Andy Pages Over/Under 1.5 bases (+102/-139)

Football and basketball are also popular prop-betting sports. WV sportsbooks offer many prop markets during the NFL, NBA, and WNBA seasons, as well as college sports seasons.

Parlays combine individual bets into a single wager. Each bet within a parlay is called a “leg,” and every leg must be successful for the parlay to pay out. Here’s a quick example of an MLB parlay we made at Caesars, with the odds of each leg and the total odds of the parlay:

  • Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 (+158)
  • Oakland Athletics moneyline (-105)
  • Braves vs. Mets Over 7.0 runs (-120)
  • Total odds: +823

A $100 bet on that parlay would pay $923 ($823 plus the original bet), but only if all three legs were successful. Parlays are high-risk, high-reward.

West Virginia sportsbooks also allow players to place same-game parlays, combining bets from within a single game.

Sports To Bet on in West Virginia

West Virginia isn’t exactly a hotbed for professional sports, but the state still plays host to avid sports fans.

West Virginia is home to a pair of Division I sports programs. With no pro franchises in the state, the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Marshall Thundering Herd have the spotlight.

Here are some of the top sports to bet on in the state.

NFL Betting in West Virginia

Football is the most popular sport in the US, and that popularity also translates to the betting world. Despite the absence of a professional team in the state, West Virginians have plenty of betting options. Many WV NFL fans cheer for the Pittsburgh Steelers or Cincinnati Bengals. Both teams are available to bet on at the state’s sportsbooks along with every other team in the league.

NBA Betting in WV

The NBA is an ideal betting sport for many, given its many statistics and power players. West Virginia doesn’t host any NBA teams, but the state is chock-full of fans of various teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. West Virginia sportsbooks have countless NBA lines, including deep wells of player props and plenty of same-game parlay opportunities.

MLB Betting in West Virginia

The Cincinnati Reds are one of the most popular MLB teams among West Virginians, who lack an in-state team to cheer for. MLB betting is a player favorite in West Virginia and around the country. Baseball’s slow pace of play and opportunity for big upsets create a great moneyline betting environment.

NHL Betting in West Virginia

West Virginia’s proximity to Pennsylvania and DC attracts fans of teams from those regions. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals are the top teams in WV, and they’re available for betting alongside every other NHL team.

College Sports Betting in West Virginia

West Virginia, unlike many other states, has virtually no major restrictions on college sports betting. In-state schools are eligible for wagers in WV, meaning fans of the WVU Mountaineers are in luck.

Of course, college betting isn’t limited to just WV schools. You can place bets on various college matches, including NCAA bowl games and March Madness.

West Virginia Sports Betting Laws

The sportsbook legalization effort in West Virginia was incredibly fast and even came before the Supreme Court overturned the PASPA in May 2018.

West Virginia’s road to legalized sports betting had a few bumps, but it led to a bustling online gambling market in the state and an early adoption of another form of gambling: online casinos.

SB 415

West Virginia made moves even before the Supreme Court declared PASPA (the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) unconstitutional. Once SCOTUS announced its landmark decision, West Virginia already had some legislative pieces in place to move quickly.

West Virginia House Delegate Shawn Fluharty started the ball rolling with a proposal to legalize sports betting. His efforts gained traction, eventually garnering support from fellow government officials. SB 415 was born, and it passed in 2019.

Gov. Jim Justice helped West Virginia’s legislature produce and pass SB 415 as early as March 2018, two months before the above-mentioned Supreme Court decision. The governor then let the bill become law without his signature so he couldn’t be accused of a conflict of interest.

The result? Sports betting launched just a few months later, in August 2018. West Virginia was the second state to legalize sports betting just after New Jersey.

The first WV sportsbook to go live in 2019 was BetLucky. However, disputes between vendors led to the site shutting down. West Virginia would become a sports betting desert for the next few months. In August 2019, things kicked into high gear when FanDuel and DraftKings both launched ahead of the NFL season.

West Virginia’s sports betting structure allows for up to 15 online sportsbooks. For its license, each sportsbook must be tethered to an in-state retail casino. Each casino, in turn, can have up to three sportsbook partners, called “skins.” This is why you see properties like the Greenbrier or Mountaineer Casino with multiple sports betting partnerships.

After a few successful years of legalized online betting, West Virginia lawmakers sought to expand the state’s options further. Delegate Moore Capito brought House Bill 4826 to the floor in February 2022. The bill aimed to allow betting on esports, and it was successful. It was speedily approved, and Governor Jim Justice signed it into law.

Overall, West Virginia’s legalization effort is a great example of fast-acting and rapid law-writing.

West Virginia Legalization Timeline

West Virginia cracks down on illegal sportsbook Bovada with a cease and desist letter.

House Bill 4826 is introduced and passed quickly, legalizing esports betting at West Virginia sportsbooks.

FanDuel and DraftKings launch to bring online sports betting to the state.

Sports betting fully launches with other retail casinos in the state.

Hollywood Casino books the first legal sports bets in the state.

The US Supreme Court overturns the PASPA, allowing sports betting legalization to be decided by states.

SB 415 is passed in West Virginia’s House of Representatives and Senate. Governor Jim Justice allows the law to be passed without signing it.

Legal WV Betting Markets

West Virginia has all of the conventional sports bets available. You can bet on in-state college sports programs, including live betting and player prop bets. That isn’t the case in every state.

The state allows pro sports draft betting, but sportsbooks can’t take bets on draft positions in the final 24 hours before the first selection.

Illegal West Virginia Betting Markets

You won’t find bets on politics, pro wrestling, or entertainer awards at West Virginia books.

Youth sports betting, including high school games or the Little League World Series, are not allowable bets.

West Virginia Sports Betting Revenue and Handle

The West Virginia Lottery reported that total sports betting handle for June 2024 came in at $33.5 million. That figure was an increase from the $30,352,182 generated in May.

Sports betting revenue tends to be very modest this time of year, given the summer sports schedule, so this trend will likely continue until September when football picks back up.

West Virginia casinos still have space to add brand partnerships called “skins.” Each casino is allowed three sportsbook skins.

That means we can expect more sportsbooks to launch over time. The West Virginia Lottery has not yet announced whether new sportsbooks have applied for licensure within the state. However, it usually does so when an operator announces their intention to offer sports betting.

What To Look for in West Virginia Sportsbooks

Our sportsbook ratings process includes hours spent with each site, including placing bets and live-streaming major events. Finding the right sportsbook for you can be overwhelming, especially when there are more than a dozen to choose from. Our review process, which covers the following categories (and others), can help you make that choice.

First and foremost, we look closely at the sportsbook’s odds and compare them to competitor lines. No single sportsbook will have the best odds across the boards (that’s a recipe for going out of business). Instead, we recommend sportsbooks that can regularly offer advantageous lines to bettors. The difference in payout between odds of -115 and -105 may seem small, but it can add up over time. This is also why we encourage bettors to make accounts with multiple sportsbooks and shop for the best odds.

This is just a fancy way of saying “number of things you can bet on.” We start by looking at the sports and leagues offered. FanDuel and DraftKings tend to lead in this category. From there, we take a more granular approach and seek out the individual bets within those spots or leagues. As you might expect, “the more, the merrier” is our approach. We want WV bettors to have a wide variety of bet types for their favorite sports.

Obviously, a lot goes into making a sportsbook easy to use. Sportsbooks in WV that can tick the most boxes inevitably get higher scores in this area.

Mobile and desktop betting are both offered by most WV sportsbooks, so our reviews take us deeper into the functionality of those platforms. An app or site should be seamless, with intuitive menus, clearly labeled buttons, and a visually appealing display.

Because there are so many factors within this section, we recommend reading individual sportsbook reviews to find your preferred sportsbook for an ideal user experience.

When evaluating sportsbooks’ payment methods, we ask three primary questions:

  1. How many methods are there?
  2. How fast do deposits and withdrawals process?
  3. What are the minimums and maximums for each method?

In a perfect world, a sportsbook in WV will offer many payment options with speedy processing and low minimums with high maximums. PayPal, ACH eCheck, and online banking are among the top methods we look for. Ideal processing times are instant for deposits and 1-3 days for withdrawals.

Most sportsbooks have a minimum deposit of around $5 or $10.

One last thing to mention is the ease of the payment process. Sportsbooks should make it simple to deposit or withdraw. The WV sports betting sites that do this best will usually get solid scores in this category.

We take your safety and protection very seriously. Sportsbooks should, too. This is why we rigorously evaluate WV sportsbook security practices. These can include SSL encryption to protect your data, trusted payment methods from reputable providers, and multi-factor authentication when you log in.

At a much higher level, we only recommend legal and licensed US sports betting sites. There are many offshore and illegal bookmakers, but you won’t find any of them advertised on our site because we care about giving you a safe betting experience in West Virginia or anywhere in the states.

You’d never have to contact a company for help in a sports betting utopia. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a sports betting utopia, so customer support is of the utmost importance in WV.

Good customer service includes offering multiple channels: instant messaging/live chat, phone lines, and email. From there, we look for response time. Sportsbook customer support teams that are dedicated to helping players will respond swiftly. Along those lines, we check to see if the sportsbook has specific customer service hours. They should also present as few hurdles as possible to getting actual help from an agent. Chatbots might be well-intentioned, but they rarely help in any meaningful way. Finally, are the solutions actually helpful? The quality of the help is as important as the availability.

You might’ve guessed these were a top priority for us, considering we list the best WV sportsbook welcome bonuses at the top of this page. We keep a finger on the pulse of bonus trends and constantly look for the most beneficial new player bonuses.

A good welcome bonus will offer sportsbook credit with a low playthrough requirement. Terms and conditions can make or break a bonus, so we also review those.

Luckily, West Virginia has a wide variety of bonus types for players to take advantage of.

WV sportsbooks won’t leave you hanging after your welcome bonus is gone. The best sportsbooks in the state will continue providing you with opportunities to maximize your experience. Promotions vary in amount and structure, but some of the more common types are odds boosts, parlay insurance,  and free-to-play contests. When we review a WV sportsbook, we look through the promotions for existing users and give an overview so players can know what to expect.

West Virginia Retail Sportsbooks

West Virginia sports betting isn’t all online. The state has five retail casinos, each with its own sportsbook. You can bet in person at these properties and watch games live on big screens while enjoying some libations or grub.

How West Virginia Compares to Other States

West Virginia is one of many legal sports betting states. It exists within a bustling online gambling region, so it’s in good company.

Like New Jersey, West Virginia was one of the first states to legalize sports betting. In fact, West Virginia already had laws ready to legalize sports betting when the Supreme Court ruled that PASPA was unconstitutional in May 2018.

West Virginian legislators wrote and passed SB 415 in the State Senate in March of the same year. They anticipated the above ruling on PASPA. As a result, West Virginia was ready to start work on sports betting regulations and licenses as soon as federal law no longer prohibited the activity.

All in all, West Virginia has been relatively proactive and pro-sports betting compared to other more recent sports betting legalizers, such as Virginia, which only launched sports betting apps in January 2021 or Tennessee, which launched sports betting but not online casinos.

Let’s take a brief look at West Virginia’s neighbors.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is home to nearly a dozen sports betting apps, which started launching in 2019. The state also welcomes online casinos, making it West Virginia’s only neighbor to do so. College prop bets are prohibited in Pennsylvania.

Maryland

Maryland was one of the latecomers to the Northeastern sports betting boom. It first launched in-person betting in 2021, and in November 2022, it introduced online sportsbooks. Maryland has no major restrictions on college sports betting.

Virginia

Virginia sports betting became legal in 2020, and apps first launched on January 20, 2021. Virginia prohibits bets on in-state college teams.

Kentucky

Kentucky hopped on the sports betting bandwagon in 2023, and now the state has eight sports betting apps. Some sportsbooks in Kentucky have a minimum betting age of 18.

Ohio

Ohio sports betting launched on January 1, 2023. Ohio allows bets on in-state college teams but prohibits player props on college sports.

DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) in WV

Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) is legal in West Virginia. DraftKings and FanDuel are the top platforms for players, but others are also available.

Underdog and Sleeper are examples of Daily Fantasy Sports sites found in West Virginia. State rules permit “draft a lineup” games but not pick’em contests based on player stats. The pick’em games are too similar to a prop bet. You can find prop bets at your licensed (and taxed) sportsbook instead.

West Virginia Social Sportsbooks

Social sportsbooks look similar to real-money sportsbooks, but they work a bit differently. Platforms such as Fliff offer free-to-play sports picks and the opportunity to play with (or against) your friends. Typically, social sportsbooks are offered via mobile websites and not dedicated apps.

Horse Race Betting in WV

Horse racing has a long history in the US, and West Virginia is a core facet of that history. You can bet on horse races in West Virginia using various channels. If you want to attend a race in person, you can do so at the Mountaineer and Hollywood Casino.

Live Thoroughbred races occur at Hollywood Casino Charles Town and Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in New Cumberland.

Off-track betting is available at the racetracks mentioned above. FanDuel Racing and TVG are among the apps for online meet betting.

West Virginia is also one of only a few states that still offers greyhound racing. Meets occur at the Mardi Gras Casino and Resort in Cross Lanes and the Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack.

West Virginia Lottery

The West Virginia Lottery regulates sports betting and offers gambling options. The well-known games Powerball and Mega Millions are available in the state, plus Cash Pop, Lotto America, and more. Retail locations sell scratch-offs, keno, and draw games.

WV Lottery players can also enjoy games online, including scratch-off-style mobile games.

West Virginia Online Casinos

March 2019 brought the legalization of online casinos to West Virginia, and the first platforms went live in 2020. Many online casinos are offered by the same companies that run WV sportsbooks, and you can play both platforms within a single app.

Online Poker in West Virginia

Online poker is legal in West Virginia. That’s the good news. The bad news? There aren’t any actual real-money poker sites available in the state. The state joined the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, and state officials say online poker could launch soon. For now, Global Poker—a social online poker platform—is the best alternative for WV players.

When online poker goes live in West Virginia, we expect BetMGM and Caesars (WSOP) to be among the platforms that will go live.

West Virginia Esports Betting

Esports betting is offered in West Virginia, as it’s permitted under state law. The only catch is you can only bet on esports matches if all the participants in the said match are 18 years old or above.

West Virginia Responsible Gaming

Responsible gambling is more than just a buzzword. It encompasses the idea that players should play responsibly. More importantly, however, it has grown to include the fact that gambling companies should take a vested interest in player safety and combating problem gambling.

West Virginia offers a number of resources to help problem gamblers:
