Dan Quinn’s name remains a betting option even though he has apparently decided to stick around in Dallas for another season.
There are several solid candidates the remaining teams can hire. Let’s take a closer look at where the Saints and Texans are with their respective searches.
New Orleans Saints
Much of the early speculation has centered on Allen. He has done a great job with the defense the last few years. The unit was once considered the team’s weakness but is now its strength. Since Allen has been with the team since 2015, hiring him may be the easiest way to keep the team from taking a step back.
Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs offensive coordinator whose name always seems to surface as a hot coaching candidate, is the second favorite to land the New Orleans job.
Payton announced his resignation just this week, so the team has not gotten far with its search. Allen is, of course, expected to interview. Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is also rumored to be on the team’s list. While Byron Leftwich has been tied to the Jaguars job, the Saints have requested an interview with him.
According to reports, the Saints are also interested in Brian Flores, one of the leading candidates for the Giants vacancy. Buzz has it the Giants will decide on someone soon. Other names drawing speculation in New Orleans include Doug Pederson, Joe Lombardi, Vance Joseph, David Shaw, and Josh McCown.
Houston Texans
As ridiculous as it sounds, Josh McCown could get the job despite having no coaching experience beyond the high school level. However, the Texans interviewed him before hiring David Culley and offered him a spot on Culley’s staff as the associate head coach. But he turned it down, opting to take a year off instead.
Houston has also interviewed Hines Ward, Flores, Lombardi, Jerod Mayo, Kevin O’Connell, and Jonathan Gannon.
Much of the speculation surrounding the Texans job has focused on anyone with ties to the Patriots because of GM Nick Caserio’s background in New England. The Texans surprised people when they hired Culley last year. With the state of the roster and the rebuild ahead, the job may not be too appealing to many candidates.
If that is the case, the Texans could go with another dark horse.
Bettor Beware Of DraftKings Rules
If you want to participate in these markets, have fun. But also know DraftKings will not pay winning wagers until the 2022 NFL preseason.
When placing a bet on the DraftKings app in Indiana, the bettor is notified, “Market will settle when the team officially (as reported by the National Football League) awards a permanent contract to the next head coach and is designated the Head Coach on the official team coaching staff roster when the next team snap takes place.”
