How To Bet on Sports In Indiana
With a dozen mobile sportsbooks currently operating in Indiana, becoming well-versed in how to bet is important. Below, we walk you through how to download, register, and claim bonuses on the mobile app of your choice.
Choose Your Sportsbook
The easiest way to place a bet on sports in Indiana is online. However, you can also visit a retail sportsbook and bet in person at casinos across the state.
Here are some features to look for when deciding which online sportsbook to join:
- Great welcome offer, including agreeable terms and conditions
- Best odds on the sport or event you’re planning to wager on first
- Preferred banking methods
- App store ratings
When you’ve found the right sportsbook, iOS users can download the state-specific app in the App Store. Android users need to download the app via Google Play. You can also bet at most sportsbooks via a web browser on any device.
Claim Your Welcome Offer
The Gaming Today links will help you with this. Some offers apply only to your first bet, so be sure to match your first wager with the right welcome offer. The sportsbook’s terms and conditions will guide you through the process.
Create an Account
All online sportsbooks in Indiana make it easy to register an account. Simply click the “signup” button and follow the steps, where you’ll provide your personal information and create a log in. Make sure to include a promo code if one is required during signup.
Verify Your Location
The app or website will prompt you to share your location, and you must do so to wager. This is per Indiana Gaming Commission regulations, as you must be physically located within the state of Indiana to wager.
Make a Deposit & Place Your First Bet
You will find a lot of sign-up bonus offers in Indiana, but you can also choose to simply skip the welcome offer and place any bets you like. Add one or several wagers to your betslip, and remember to gamble responsibly!
Types of Bets at Indiana Sportsbooks
With a dozen sportsbooks available in Indiana, there is no shortage of wagers. Here are the most important (and common) bet types to know.
Moneyline
Moneyline bets are among the most popular wagers. You’re just betting on a team (or side) to win. If you place a moneyline bet, you cash out as long as the team or individual you are wagering on prevails. An example of a moneyline bet would be picking the Indiana Fever to win as a -470 favorite over the Seattle Storm.
Point Spread
Point spread bets involve wagering on a team’s margin of victory or defeat. For instance, if you bet the Indianapolis Colts as a -10 favorite, they have to win by 11 or more.
Total (Over/Under)
When you wager on the Over/Under in a game or event, you are betting on the total points scored in a game landing over or under a line set by the sportsbook. An example of the Over/Under bet would be betting on the Pacers and Lakers to combine for over 210 points or under 210 points.
Parlay and SGP
Parlays and same-game parlays often pay out more than standard moneyline bets because they require two or more outcomes to materialize in order to cash. An example of a parlay would be betting on the Colts to win outright, on Joe Flacco to throw for two or more touchdowns, and on running back Jonathan Taylor rushing for more than 100 yards.
Futures
Here, you are betting on the outcome of season-long events, such as picking the Indiana Pacers to win the NBA title.
Sports To Bet on in Indiana
From Reggie Miller to Peyton Manning, Indiana has seen its share of iconic athletes come and go. The 2006 Colts won Super Bowl 41, and the Pacers reached the NBA Finals to cap the 1999-2000 season.
It is a sports betting luxury to be able to place in-game bets on Indiana colleges. The Notre Dame football program has a rich history. Purdue and Indiana are March Madness fixtures. Summer brings golf, motorsports, and MLB bets as we wait for the NFL Colts and NBA Pacers to return each fall.

NFL Betting in Indiana
Indianapolis Colts: The NFL reigns supreme as the most popular sport for betting in the US, and the Indianapolis Colts are by far the most popular professional team for betting in Indiana. They used their No. 4 overall pick in the NFL Draft to draft Anthony Richardson and hope the young signal caller will be back in 2024 to begin a new era of success for the Colts.
Caesars Sportsbook is the official sports betting partner of the Colts, making that platform a premier NFL betting option. But all online sportsbooks in Indiana will have a wide range of NFL betting lines and promotions.
The Indianapolis Colts won the Super Bowl in 2007 under the direction of QB Peyton Manning.

NBA Betting in Indiana
Indiana Pacers: Indiana Pacers fans have yet to celebrate an NBA Championship, but that’s largely due to a relentless string of bad luck, including injuries, suspensions, and more. The Pacers last played in an NBA championship in 2000 where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Pacers advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2024 but were swept by the eventual champion Boston Celtics.

One of the biggest stars in sports currently is Caitlin Clark. Clark played in college for the Iowa Hawkeyes, where she became the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer and two-time national player of the year. Clark was drafted first overall in 2024 by the Indiana Fever and is part of a talented group of first-year players bringing tons of attention to the league.

Indiana Hoosiers
The Bobby Knight era is well in the past, but basketball still outshines other sports in Bloomington. The Hoosiers live up to expectations as an NCAA tournament contender in most years. The football team has shown flashes of success, but basketball is still the dominant brand at IU.
The Hoosiers have reached the Final Four eight times, including five National Championships and a 2002 runner-up finish. They’ve also reached the NCAA tournament 41 times, including bids in each of the last two seasons.
That doesn’t mean fans have to wait until November to enjoy the crimson and cream. The football team has played in 13 bowl games, most recently the 26-20 loss to Ole Miss in the 2020 Outback Bowl.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Fighting Irish are the most popular sports team in the state, not just the most popular college team. Indiana bleeds green.
The Irish are considered independent in football, but they have a gridiron relationship with the ACC. The football program has claimed 22 national championships.
Purdue Boilermakers
Like their in-state Big Ten rivals, Purdue’s richest history is tied to college basketball. The football program is coming off a bowl appearance, however, and a coaching change could add more momentum in 2023.
The reigning Big Ten Tournament champions have made 34 NCAA tournament appearances, including a pair of Final Fours. The program’s high watermarks are second-place finishes in 2024 and 1969.
The football team reached the Big Ten Championship Game in 2022 and earned an appearance in the Citrus Bowl. However, Purdue managed only four wins in 2023. The program has 21 bowl appearances in its history and claimed the 1931 National Championship.

Indiana Sports Betting Laws
Sports betting is legal in the state of Indiana after some early resistance. Former Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was staunchly opposed to gambling expansion. However, he was replaced by fellow Republican Eric Holcomb, who began serving as the state’s governor on Jan. 9, 2017.
Holcomb then led the state to its current status as a sports betting haven. He ensured the legalization of sports gambling when he signed House Bill 1015 into law on May 8, 2019, which allows adults 21 and older to place bets on sporting events.
Under the legislation, sports betting can be offered at the state’s 11 casinos, two racinos, and multiple off-track betting parlors. Pursuant to a 2021 tribal-state gaming compact between the state of Indiana and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, the tribe is also permitted to offer sports wagering.
The bill had bipartisan support, passing the Indiana House of Representatives by a margin of 59-36 and the state Senate 37-12. The law prohibits wagering on esports.
- Indiana Sports Betting Taxes and Fees: The initial fee for obtaining a sports-betting license is $100,000. One year after obtaining the license, licensees must also pay an annual administrative fee of $50,000. Sports wagering is taxed at 9.5 percent of adjusted gross revenue.
- Indiana Sports Betting Tax Rate: The rate is 9.5 percent for commercial operators.
- Legal Betting Age in Indiana: You must be at least 21 years of age to wager in Indiana.
- Wagering on College Sports: Betting on college sports in Indiana is limited to Division I sports in the NCAA. In-play collegiate player prop bets are prohibited.
Indiana Legalization Timeline
BetRivers and DraftKings launched in Indiana, the first two licensed online sportsbooks in the state.
As of this day, 13 different casinos across the state accept retail sports bets. Rising Star Casino and Caesars Southern Indiana also opened sportsbooks. Hard Rock Northern Indiana will open one in Spring 2021. The only casinos without sportsbook lounges will be Four Winds South Bend and Majestic Star riverboat casinos.
Three Indiana casinos (Indiana Grand Casino in Shelbyville, Ameristar East Chicago, and Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg) began taking in-person bets at their retail sportsbooks.
Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb signs the new gambling expansion bill into law, allowing for more Indiana casinos as well as legalized retail and online sportsbooks.
The Indiana Senate passed Bill 552, which expands the number of casinos in the state and began the legalization efforts of sports betting.
Legal Indiana Betting Markets
From bull-riding to bowling and from rugby to the red carpet, Indiana offers one of the best betting menus in the country.
You can bet on:
- Indiana’s NCAA Division I teams
- Academy Awards
- Nathan’s July 4 Hot Dog Contest
- MLB’s Home Run Derby
- Pro sports drafts and more
Illegal IN Betting Markets
Besides banning bets on high school and amateur sports, Indiana has some of the most relaxed sports betting laws in the country. However, regulators have outright banned esports wagering in the state. This is due to the fact that many esports teams have underage players.
Indiana bettors can place a bet on the Oscars, but other awards shows don’t make the cut. Bare-knuckle fighting isn’t on the betting menu, either.
That still leaves plenty of sports betting options year-round for Indiana residents.
Indiana Sports Betting Revenue and Handle
Since sports betting launched in the state, Indiana has produced solid sports betting revenue figures.
The Indiana Gaming Commission reported that the total sports betting handle in the state was $261,071,808 for the month of July 2024, down from the $298,166,251 generated in June. The drop in handle is typical for this time of year, as wagering generally slows in the summer months.
DraftKings led all Indiana sportsbooks in July with $114,094,178 in handle.
March saw the most income thus far for Indiana in 2024 with $500.7 million in handle.
Sports betting income resulted in $382.8 million in revenue for Indiana sports betting in 2023. Overall, the Indiana sports betting industry has been a reliable source of tax revenue:
| 🗓 July 2024 | 🗓 June 2024 | 🗓 May 2024 |

How Betting in Indiana Compares to Other States
The Hoosier State has new competition with the arrival of online sports bets in Ohio, but variety keeps the market healthy to the east.
Indiana is among the only states with legal sports betting where you can bet on in-state college teams, place in-game bets on college games, and bet on TV events like the Oscars. Everywhere else places restrictions on at least one of those categories.
The Hoosier State remains a hyper-competitive market, and bettors will benefit in the form of promotions and exclusive odds.
Indiana vs. the Midwest
Illinois and Iowa both offer online sports betting. In Iowa, the in-person registration requirement expired on Jan. 1, 2021.
Further, Iowa does not allow in-game bets on college games, and Illinois restricts betting on in-state college teams in general. Indiana does not have either restriction.
Nowhere else in the Midwest allows bets on TV competitions like the Oscars either. Betting on politics—a popular activity in Europe and elsewhere in the world—could be next.
Pros and Cons of Indiana Sports Betting
One inherent advantage lies in the fact that bettors never had to register in person at an online sportsbook in Indiana, a requirement that was a significant nuisance at times for sports bettors in Iowa and Illinois.
The state also has a reasonable tax rate and generous betting options. Bettors can enjoy a great variety of sportsbooks and betting markets.
Pros
- One of the top sports betting markets in the US
- Bet on all major sports, with no college betting restrictions
- Safe sports betting apps licensed by the Indiana Gaming Commission
Cons
- Betting on Esports is prohibited

Social and Sweepstakes Games in IN
Online casino games haven’t found support in the Hoosier State, so Indiana bettors don’t have a real-money option. Social casinos or sweepstakes casinos can fill the void. Fliff, which is a combination of a traditional sportsbook and a social or sweepstakes casino, is one example.
These games use fictional money, like “sweeps coins,” to fund games like slots, roulette, or card games. Some games offer you the option of using real money to extend or enhance your gameplay. The sweeps money can be redeemed for real cash prizes as you move up the leaderboard.

Indiana DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports)
Indiana became the second state to legalize daily fantasy sports when then-Gov. Mike Pence signed Senate Bill 339 in March 2016.
DFS is an alternative to a prop bet at a sportsbook. You can draft daily or weekly lineups or play pick’em games based on a player’s stats. DraftKings and FanDuel are in the DFS space. PrizePicks, Underdog Fantasy, and Yahoo! are well-known brands as well.
