How to Bet on College Basketball in North Carolina
Much like the number of teams available to bet on, there are multiple ways to get a bet down on a college basketball game. Whether it be the spread, moneyline, point total, or futures bets, the top North Carolina sports betting apps will have odds ready to be bet on.
Spread
Betting on the spread (point spread) is a wager on the margin of victory during one game. Before the game tips off, oddsmakers will designate one team as the underdog (represented with a +) and the favorite (represented with a -).
Each team will also have a number they must keep the game within. Favorites must win by a specific number, and underdogs must keep the game within that number or win outright. For example, North Carolina must win by at least four to cover if the Tar Heels are 3.5-point favorites (-3.5) over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+3.5). On the other hand, Wake Forest cannot lose by more than three to cover as an underdog.
Moneyline
The moneyline is the most basic form of betting on a sports game. Instead of keeping the game within a certain number, the moneyline picks which team will win outright.
When betting on the moneyline, the number listed will tell you how much you stand to win. Favorites will return less money than underdogs on the moneyline. For example, Duke’s moneyline odds of -120 over NC State would require a $120 wager to win $100. If NC State is given +120 odds, a $100 wager would return $120 in winnings.
Point Total
The point total (Over/Under) is the estimated total number of points scored by both teams in one game. Bettors can wager on whether the final score will go over or under the set total. An example would be a game between North Carolina and Duke. If the total is set at 152.5, you can bet on the combined score to go over or under that number.
Prop Bets
Prop bets are wagers on the occurrence or non-occurrence of an event, outcome, or player stats for one game. Most sportsbooks have hundreds of prop bets for multiple different markets on a game.
Sometimes, a prop bet involves betting on a player’s over/under on a certain stat (e.g., over/under 18.5 points scored for Armando Bacot). Other types of prop bets are simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ wagers. For example, ‘Will the game go to overtime?’ is a standard prop bet for every league.
Parlay
Parlays are when you combine multiple different bets into one wager, typically with a very valuable payout. Types of wagers that can be combined into parlays depend on the sports betting app you use, but props, spread, moneyline, or total are typically accepted into a parlay at all sportsbooks.
The higher the payout of your parlay, the more legs (bets) it has. However, for it to pay, every leg must be a winner.
Futures
Futures are wagers that will be settled sometime later in the season. The most common examples are betting on who will win March Madness, player awards, and season stat totals. Other examples include conference championships and betting on a team to make it to a specific round of the postseason.
