Mississippi recorded an impressive year-on-year increase of 19.7% in its sports betting handle for September, with a total of $51.6 million in bets placed.
While the handle saw substantial growth compared to the previous year’s $43.1 million for September, the state experienced an 8.0% decline in revenue. In September, Mississippi generated $8.1 million, down from the $8.8 million it earned in 2022.
In comparison to the Aug. 2023 total handle of $21.4 million, Mississippi saw a remarkable 141.1% increase in September. The state’s sports betting revenue for September also saw a significant rise, with earnings totaling 200% more than the $2.7 million generated in August.
Coastal Casinos Lead the Way in Mississippi Sports Betting
Coastal casinos, including renowned establishments like Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi, Island View Casino, and Golden Nugget, maintain their status as the top destinations for sports betting enthusiasts in Mississippi. These casinos attracted a sizable portion of the September handle, accumulating $33.5 million in sports bets. In contrast, central casinos saw players wagering a total of $12.3 million, while northern casinos generated $5.8 million in sports betting activities.
When it comes to revenue, the coastal casinos led the way with an impressive $5.8 million. Meanwhile, the central and northern casinos reported revenue of $1.7 million and $698,827, respectively.
A similar trend was experienced in August with coastal casinos witnessing $13.6 million in sports betting and generating $1.6 million in revenue. Central casinos followed with $5.2 million wagered and $730,257 in revenue. Northern casinos had the lowest figures, with players betting $2.6 million and producing $371,721 in revenue.
Football Emerges as the Preferred Choice for Sports Bettors in Mississippi
As the new NFL season began in early September, football took center stage for sports bettors in The Mongolia State. At the coastal casinos, a total of $19.3 million was wagered on football, representing 57.6% of the overall sports betting volume in September.
In the central venues, out of the $12.3 million in total sports betting, $5.9 million was made on football. Northern casinos also heavily favored football, with 58.6% of its total sports bets in September placed on the sport.
August saw sports bettors primarily focus their wagers on the state’s favorite sport, baseball. Coastal casinos generated around $7.2 million from baseball betting, while central and northern venues recorded $2.0 million and $1.2 million, respectively.
