Jacksonville at -395 is the shortest moneyline on the Week 1 board, and we think the Jaguars cover the 7.5 as well. That is our strongest play of the opening slate. Our favourite underdog is Denver at +124 in Kansas City.

Roughly a dozen Week 1 games sit inside four points, so the value is concentrated in the few spots where the market has taken a real position. Here are our best bets, the two we are avoiding, and a parlay for anyone who wants the longer price.

Our Three Best Bets for Week 1

Best bet: Jaguars -7.5 vs Browns

Jacksonville is the safest favourite on the slate at around -395 on the moneyline, and the spread is where we like it. The total sits at 40.5, the lowest of the week.

That combination is the reason for the confidence. Low totals help favourites cover, because fewer possessions means fewer opportunities for an underdog to close a gap through variance. A team that needs three scores in a 37-point game has a harder path than the same team in a 50-point game.

The lean: Jacksonville -7.5.

NFL Week 1 Best Bets
NFL Week 1 Best Bets

Best bet: Broncos +2.5 at Chiefs

Our favourite underdog for sport betting week 1. Denver is getting points and sits near +124 on the moneyline in a divisional road game.

The reason is Patrick Mahomes. He has been cleared to open the season after a season-ending knee injury, and a healthy Mahomes at Arrowhead against a division rival would normally command a considerably bigger number than 2.5. The market is already telling you it has questions about his first competitive action in months.

Denver does not need to win. It needs to stay within a field goal, in a game where the favourite is working back from a major injury with no game tape to judge.

The lean: Denver +2.5.

Best bet: Under 44.5, Patriots at Seahawks

Week 1 totals are routinely set below where they land across a full season, and there is a structural reason. Offensive timing lags defensive effort in September, and coaches call openers conservatively.

Add a Wednesday night opener between two teams that met in Super Bowl LX seven months ago, and both coaching staffs have unusually deep tape on each other. Seattle also lost Zach Charbonnet to reserve PUP for the first four games, which thins the run game in a spot where Seattle would want to control pace.

The lean: under 44.5.

Two We Are Avoiding

Packers at Vikings, MIN -1.5

This line flipped. Green Bay opened as the 1.5-point favourite and the market moved all the way to Minnesota, driven in part by Micah Parsons being out and by Kyler Murray taking over as the Vikings starter.

A flipped line signals the market changed direction, not just degree. When two divisional teams are separated by a point and a half and the number has already swung through zero, there is no edge left to find. Pass.

Bills at Texans, BUF -1.5

One of the slimmest numbers on the board, and it has moved. Houston’s line shift turned what looked like a live underdog spot into something closer to a coin flip.

Not betting a game is a position, not a failure to have an opinion. This is one of them.

Week 1 Parlay: Three Legs

For anyone who wants a longer price, this is where we would put it. All three legs are drawn from the analysis above rather than reached for.

LegPickReasoning
1Jaguars -7.5Safest favourite, lowest total of the week
2Eagles -4.5Home divisional opener, number sits below the key seven
3Under 44.5 (NE at SEA)Week 1 totals run low, thinned Seattle run game

A word on parlays. They pay more because they are harder to win, not because they represent better value. Three legs at roughly even money is a payout in the region of 6 to 1, and the true probability of all three landing is lower than the price implies once the juice compounds. Treat it as an entertainment stake, not the core of your week.

How We Pick Week 1

  • Respect the key numbers. Three and seven are the most common NFL margins. A line at 7 rather than 7.5 changes the bet materially.
  • Fade double-digit Week 1 favourites. Openers are sloppier than the talent gap suggests, and there is no tape to justify a big number.
  • Lean under on totals. September scoring runs below the season average.
  • Wait on unresolved injuries. Atlanta’s quarterback call is the biggest outstanding variable this week.
  • Shop the number. Half a point across books compounds across a season more than any single pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bet for NFL Week 1?

Our strongest play is Jaguars -7.5 at home against Cleveland, in a game with the lowest total of the week at 40.5. Jacksonville is also the shortest moneyline on the board at around -395.

What is the best underdog bet in Week 1?

Denver at +2.5 in Kansas City, near +124 on the moneyline. Patrick Mahomes is cleared but returning from a season-ending knee injury, and the market has already priced in uncertainty about his first competitive action.

Which Week 1 games should you avoid?

Packers at Vikings and Bills at Texans. Both sit at 1.5 points, and both have seen meaningful line movement that removes any edge. The Green Bay line flipped direction entirely.

Is a Week 1 parlay worth it?

Only as an entertainment stake. Parlays pay more because they are harder to win, and the compounding juice means the price rarely reflects true probability. Keep the stake small and treat single bets as the core.

How reliable are Week 1 NFL picks?

Less than any other week. Sportsbooks and analysts are working from projection rather than competitive game action, so opening week carries the widest range of outcomes of the season.

Why is Jacksonville such a big favourite?

The market has Cleveland priced near the bottom of the league, and the game carries the lowest total of the week at 40.5. Low-scoring games structurally favour the better team, because fewer possessions leave an underdog fewer chances to close a gap.
