From the Patriots-Seahawks opener to the final Monday night game, here are our picks for all 16 NFL Week 1 games. Nine of the 16 Week 1 games opened at a field goal or less, which means most of this slate is a coin flip on paper. The exceptions are where the value sits, and the Chargers laying 11.5 against Arizona is the number the whole board is built around.

Below are our NFL Week 1 predictions for every game, the three picks we like most, and the two spreads we think the market has wrong. The season opens Wednesday 9 September with a Super Bowl rematch in Seattle.

All spreads referenced were checked ahead of publication and move constantly. Confirm the current line before acting on any of this.

Our Three Best Picks for Week 1

1. Jaguars -7.5 vs Browns

The largest non-Chargers spread on the board, and the one we are most comfortable with. Jacksonville is at home against a Cleveland team the market has priced near the bottom of the league, in a game with a Week 1 low total of 40.5.

Low totals help favourites cover in a specific way. Fewer possessions means fewer chances for variance to rescue an underdog. The lean is Jacksonville.

2. Eagles -4.5 vs Commanders

A divisional opener at home with Philadelphia laying under a touchdown. Divisional games tend to stay closer than the talent gap suggests, but 4.5 gives enough room without crossing the key number of seven.

The total sits at 46.5, which points to a normal-scoring game rather than a shootout. The lean is Philadelphia.

3. Under 44.5, Patriots at Seahawks

Week 1 totals are routinely set below where they finish across a season, and there is a reason. Offences lag defences early, timing is off, and coaches are conservative in openers.

Add a Wednesday night opener between two teams that just played each other in the Super Bowl, and there is a strong case for a slower game than the number implies. The lean is under.

Two Spreads We Think Are Wrong

Chargers -11.5 vs Cardinals

This is the only double-digit favourite in Week 1, and double-digit spreads in opening week carry more risk than the same number in November. Books are pricing off projection with no competitive game action behind it.

Arizona does not need to win. It needs to stay within 11.5, and Week 1 games are frequently sloppier and closer than the talent gap suggests. We lean toward the points here.

Vikings -1.5 vs Packers

This line flipped. Green Bay opened as the 1.5-point favourite and the market moved all the way to Minnesota. A flip is a change of direction, not a change of degree, and those are worth questioning.

Divisional games this tight usually come down to home field and turnovers rather than any pre-season projection. We are not confident either way, which is exactly why we would leave it alone.

The Three Storylines That Should Shape Your Picks

Seattle and New England, seven months on

Seattle beat New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX while laying 4.5. The Week 1 line is shorter at -3.5, and it has drifted down since opening at -4 in May.

Seattle went 17-3 straight up and 15-5 against the spread last season, which is elite in both columns. New England was 17-4 SU and 13-8 ATS. The market is respecting New England more in the rematch than it did in February.

NFL Week 1 2026 predictions

Mahomes returns on Monday night

Patrick Mahomes is back for Kansas City after a season-ending knee injury. He has said he intends to play as himself rather than cautiously.

This is the hardest game on the board to price. Quarterback returns from major injury produce wide outcome ranges, and Week 1 gives you no tape to work from. Treat the number with caution and watch the practice reports.

An NFC West heavyweight in Melbourne

The Rams opened the season as Super Bowl favourites and are only laying 2.5 to San Francisco at a neutral site 10,000 miles from either home stadium.

Neutral-site games remove home field, and long-haul travel affects both teams equally here. That short number on the best team in the conference is worth a look.

Prediction Markets Are Pricing Week 1 Too

Sportsbooks are no longer the only place these games are priced. CFTC-regulated prediction markets now run event contracts on NFL outcomes, and they are worth watching alongside the spread.

The mechanics differ in a way that matters. On a prediction market you buy and sell yes or no contracts at prices set by other traders, and you can exit a position before the game finishes. A sportsbook sets a line and takes the other side.

Two things to keep straight. Prediction markets are 18+ and regulated as financial venues, while sportsbooks are 21+ and regulated by state gaming authorities. And the legal position for sports event contracts is currently unsettled after a federal appeals court ruling in late August. Our prediction markets coverage explains where that stands.

How to Use Week 1 Predictions Sensibly

  • Week 1 is the least predictable week of the season. No competitive tape exists. Treat every pick, including ours, as a lean rather than a conclusion.
  • Injury news is the biggest mover. A Friday or Saturday inactive report shifts Week 1 lines more than a full week of action would in midseason.
  • Passing is a position. Two games on our board have no edge either way. Not betting them is the correct call, not a failure to have an opinion.
  • Key numbers matter. Three and seven are the most common NFL margins. A line crossing either one changes the bet materially.
  • Shop for the number. Half a point between books compounds across a season more than any individual pick does.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best NFL Week 1 pick?

Our strongest lean is Jaguars -7.5 at home against Cleveland, in a game with the lowest total of the week at 40.5. Low totals reduce the possessions an underdog needs to stay in range.

Which Week 1 underdog has the best chance to cover?

Arizona at +11.5 against the Chargers. It is the only double-digit spread in Week 1, and opening-week games are frequently closer and sloppier than pre-season projections suggest.

Are NFL Week 1 predictions reliable?

Less so than any other week. Sportsbooks and analysts are working from projection rather than competitive game action, so opening week carries the widest range of outcomes of the season.

What is the pick for the Super Bowl rematch?

We lean Seattle at -3.5, but the stronger position is the under at 44.5. Week 1 totals are routinely set below where they land across a full season.

Which Week 1 games should you avoid betting?

Bills at Texans at -1.5 and Packers at Vikings at -1.5. Both are effectively coin flips, and the Vikings line flipped from Green Bay during the summer, which signals genuine market uncertainty.

How much do NFL Week 1 lines move?

More than any other week. Without game action to price from, opening week numbers react sharply to injury reports and market money right up to kickoff.
