It’s been a challenging year for Austin FC in their first season as members of Major League Soccer. But they added a strategic partner on Thursday that will help the franchise establish themselves in the league.

PointsBet has been named a Founding Partner of Austin FC in the sports gaming category, according to a press release from PointsBet today. PointsBet is a online gaming company operating in seven states, and offers odds and has partnerships with organizations in every major professional sport in North America, including MLS, the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, and the WNBA.

Austin FC joined the MLS for the 2021-22 season, playing in a state-of-the-art Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. The team currently sits in last place in the Western Conference, but they did defeat their rivals the Houston Dynamo on the road earlier this season. Despite being a new club, they are proving popular: ranking fourth in the MLS with an average attendance of 20,738 fans per game.

The exclusive deal between Austin FC and PointsBet includes a sponsorship agreement for future retail and online sports betting, daily fantasy, as well as free-to-play games. It will also include sponsorship opportunities and joint giveaways with the team at the stadium.

This marks the first partnership for PointsBet with an MLS club, adding to an impressive list of sports franchises the company has deals with. The list includes the NFL’s Colts and Bears, the Pistons and Pacers of the NBA, the Tigers in MLB, and the Avalanche in the NHL.

It’s expected that PointsBet will receive signage and branding opportunities within Q2 Stadium, as well as on team websites and publications. The “PointsBet Sports Bar”will also be open during and before matches, available to fans who have a ticket.

Unusual for a sportsbook in the U.S., PointsBet and Austin FC are committed to launching an eventual sportsbook that’s available in both English and Spanish, since PointsBet’s ownership of its technology platform allows the company to integrate Spanish language functionality.

When Will Sports Betting Be Legal In Texas?

Legislators did not bring sports betting to a vote in 2021, missing deadlines. The issue now seems to be tabled until the next time that the state constitution can be amended, which would be 2023.

Sports fans can participate in the “Lone Star Pick’Em” free-to-play contest courtesy of NBC Sports (a PointsBet official sports betting partner). The game requires users to predict outcomes in pro and college games featuring Texas-based teams.
