We all know the classics, like the “Helmet Catch” or the time the Seahawks probably should have just handed the ball to Marshawn Lynch. But the Super Bowl has been around for 60 years, and some of the most heart-stopping moments have slipped into the “Oh yeah, I forgot about that” category.

As the hype builds for this year’s big game, fans aren’t just reminiscing — they’re also diving into the latest betting trends and prediction markets and checking out the best odds across Super Bowl 60 markets to see where the action might go.

So let’s rewind the tape and remember a few unforgettable moments, like we’re chatting on the couch during halftime.

The King of Pop stands still (1993)

Michael Jackson basically invented the modern halftime show. Before him, it was mostly marching bands and Carol Channing. When MJ took the stage in 1993 at the Super Bowl XXVII, he started the show by literally doing nothing. He popped up from under the stage and just stood there like a statue for nearly two minutes while 100 million people lost their minds. He just soaked in the crowd and let the tension build until the stadium was vibrating. Only a true legend could win a Super Bowl by standing perfectly still.

Whitney Houston defines the anthem (1991)

Most people fly through the national anthem to get to the kickoff, but Whitney Houston made the world stop. During Super Bowl XXV, she delivered a version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” that was so powerful it actually became a Top 20 hit on the radio. Even though it was later revealed she pre-recorded the vocals to ensure they sounded perfect over the stadium roar, that performance remains the gold standard. Every singer who has done it since is basically just competing for second place.

Devin Hester makes history fast (2007)

If you blinked at the start of Super Bowl XLI, you missed the greatest start to a game ever. The Indianapolis Colts were so scared of return man Devin Hester that they spent all week talking about how to stop him. Then they kicked it to him anyway. Fourteen seconds later, Hester was in the end zone after a 92-yard return. It was the first time in history the opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown. It remains one of the loudest moments a stadium has ever experienced.

The lights out ‘blackout bowl’ (2013)

Let’s assume you’re in the middle of the biggest game of your life and the power just goes out. That actually happened in Super Bowl XLVII. Right after the halftime show, the Superdome in New Orleans went pitch black for 34 minutes. Players had to stretch in the dark while fans tried to figure out if Beyoncé had literally blown the fuses with her performance. The craziest part is that the 49ers were getting crushed before the lights went out, but they used the break to stage a comeback that almost won them the game.

The ‘Philly Special’ (2018)

This might be the ultimate “wait, watch this” moment in the history of sports. The Philadelphia Eagles were facing the mighty Patriots and had one chance to score right before halftime. Most teams would play it safe, but the Eagles went full Hollywood.

Quarterback Nick Foles walked up to his line and started acting all confused like he was calling a different play. While the defense was busy wondering what he was doing, the ball was snapped to the running back. He tossed it to a tight end, who then threw a perfect pass to a wide-open Foles in the end zone. A quarterback catching a touchdown in the Super Bowl is basically unheard of. The play was so legendary that the city of Philadelphia actually built a statue of it.

The shocking goal-line pick (2015)

This is the play that launched a million “why didn’t they just run the ball” memes. The Seattle Seahawks were on the one-yard line with the Super Bowl trophy basically in their hands. They had Marshawn Lynch, a guy nicknamed “Beast Mode,” who was almost impossible to stop. Instead of handing it to him, they decided to throw a pass. An undrafted rookie named Malcolm Butler saw it coming, jumped the route, and snatched the ball to win the game for the Patriots. It was a total “I can’t believe that just happened” moment that planted a seed on football history forever.

Prince slays in the purple rain (2007)

In the year 2007 game, the sky opened up, and it started pouring during the halftime show. Most performers would have slipped or complained, but Prince just leaned into it. He stood on a stage shaped like his logo and played “Purple Rain” while actual purple-tinted rain fell from the sky. It was unscripted, dangerous, and easily the most cinematic performance in the history of television.

With new props, prediction tools, and state-by-state betting options, the excitement extends well beyond the field.
