The superfecta bet in horse racing challenges bettors to correctly pick the order of the first four finishers. You can make superfecta bets on the major races including this weekend’s Breeders Cup card. Superfecta bets can have large payouts, but they are difficult to win.
What makes it even better, unlike most other types of horse bets, you can make your stake as low as ten cents. The superfecta bet is considered an exotic wager in horse racing. More from Breeders Cup: Breeders Cup Classic overview
Superfecta Betting: An Overview Ahead of the Breeders Cup

How to Bet a Superfecta
It’s pretty straightforward, but there are variations on how to bet a superfecta that we will cover in detail below.
Straight Superfecta
To bet a superfecta in horse racing, you pick the first four finishers in a race in the correct order. Needless to say, this is not easy to do! But superfecta payouts can be incredibly large as a result.
Superfecta Bet: 2023 Breeders Cup Classic Example
Let’s use four of the favorite horses in this year’s Breeders Cup Classic in our superfecta example. We’re targeting Arcangelo (1), Arabian Knight (12), Ushba Tesoro (8), and White Abarrio (3).
Here is how you would place that superfecta at the betting window: “$2 Superfecta on 1, 12, 8, and 3.” Remember, the horses will have to finish 1, 12, 8 and 3 to win this straight superfecta. Fortunately, there are other ways to make superfecta bets in horse racing.

Types of Superfecta Bets
Superfecta Key
The superfecta key bet requires you to bet on a key horse to win with a combination of three or more horses to have second-, third-, and fourth-place finishes.
You like the No. 5 horse to win — that’s your key horse. Play the No. 5 horse on top of the No. 2, No. 4, No. 9, and No. 11. You’ll cash a winning ticket if your key horse wins and three of the other horses finish second, third, and fourth.
Superfecta Full Wheel
Know the horse that will definitely win the race but unsure who will finish second, third, and fourth? That’s when you should make a superfecta full wheel bet.
The idea here is to cover every possible superfecta combination after you’ve determined the winner. In a six-horse field, this bet will cost $60. The more horses, the higher the wager amount.
Superfecta Part Wheel
The Superfecta part wheel bet works similarly, but you’re only putting the winner on top of horses you believe will finish second, third, and fourth instead of all the entrants.
Let’s say you bet the No. 9 to win on top of No. 2, No. 4, No. 7, and No. 11. There are 24 different winning superfecta combinations using those horses, so this bet will cost you $24.
Superfecta Box
The superfecta box bet requires you to pick the first four finishers, but you don’t need to have the exact order of finish. By boxing your superfecta, you’re covering every possible winning combination.
This can be an expensive proposition if you’re using more than four horses, and if you’re doing $1 bets. A $1 superfacta box will cost $24 because there are 24 winning combinations based on your four-horse wager. What would it cost to include seven horses? That would be $840 to cover 840 winning combinations. Remember, you minimum stakes on superfectas are much lower.
How Much Can I Win with Superfecta Bets?
Superfecta bets can produce record payouts. For example, a $1 superfecta paid out $864,253 in winnings on the 2005 Kentucky Derby. The amount of your bet and the odds of winning horses are the biggest factors in the size of your return. Some tracks offer 10-cent superfecta bets while others require a minimum bet of $1.
How Do Superfecta Bet Payouts Work?
Horse racing’s parimutuel betting system features bettors competing against one another as opposed to the house or track. If there are $5,000 $1 superfecta tickets sold, $5,000 goes into a designated prize pool.
The track typically takes out about 20% of exotic betting pools as its revenue. In this example, if there are 10 winners, each would receive a share of the prize pool. With the track’s take-out of $1,000, the winning bettors would share $4,000, or $400 apiece. Not a bad payday on a $1 bet.
