  • September 26, 2024: Wyoming was named among the lowest-scoring states in a Vixio Regulatory Intelligence report. The report states that most states with legal betting fail to meet half of the responsible gaming standards proposed by the National Council on Problem Gambling.

Types of Bets at Wyoming Sportsbooks

The moneyline is a sports betting term that simply means wagering on a team to win. The odds are formulated based on various factors, with the favored team giving smaller payouts than the underdog. Here’s an example for the Denver Broncos from Week 1 of the 2024-25 NFL season:

  • Seattle Seahawks -235

In sports betting, a “+” means that the team is the underdog and more likely to lose, while the “-” symbol indicates a favored team. The payouts correspond. The odds above mean a $100 bet on the Broncos would win you $194 (plus the $100 back). Meanwhile, a winning $100 bet on the Seahawks would pay $42.55 in profit on top of your wager. Betting the favorite might be safer, but it pays less when successful. The Gaming Today Moneyline Calculator can help with the math.

Point spreads take mismatches and even them out with imaginary points. Using the same NFL game from above, let’s look at the point spread:

  • Denver Broncos +4.5 (-102)
  • Seattle Seahawks -4.5 (-120)

The first number after each team’s name is the advantage or disadvantage they get within the context of a point spread bet. If you were to bet on the Broncos to “cover” the spread, they would need to either win the game or lose by fewer than 4.5 points. A final score of Broncos 25, Seahawks 27 would mean the Broncos cover the spread, and the bet wins.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks must win by more than 4.5 points to cover the spread. Point spread odds are typically close to the -105 to -120 range because the imaginary points even the playing field.

“What’s the Over/Under?” comes from totals betting. At Wyoming sportsbooks, totals are wagers placed on the total amount of points that will be scored in a given match or game. Bettors wager on whether the end total will be Over or Under a set line, which is put forth by the sportsbook. Here’s an example:

  • Denver Broncos vs. Seattle Seahawks
  • Over 42.5 (-105)
  • Under 42.5 (-115)

You can bet on either the “Over” or the “Under,” and it doesn’t matter which team wins. Instead, the total amount of points scored by both teams will determine the outcome. If you bet the Over and the final score is Broncos 14, Seahawks 42, the total is 56, which easily surpasses the minimum 42.5 for the Over to hit.

The Under works the same way. A bet on the Under would win if the final score were Broncos 14, Seahawks 10, for a total of 24.

NFL Betting in Wyoming

You can bet on the NFL in Wyoming, and it’s one of the most popular betting sports. MLB Betting in Wyoming

Due to Wyoming’s proximity to Denver, the most prominent MLB team in Wyoming is the Colorado Rockies. No matter your fandom, though, you can place all sorts of wagers on baseball at the state’s sportsbooks. Baseball is particularly a favorite among moneyline bettors and live bettors.

NHL Betting in Wyoming

You might be sensing a pattern: Wyoming sports bettors have a penchant for being fans of Colorado teams. The NHL won’t break that pattern, as the Avalanche is among the most popular hockey teams in Wyoming.

NHL betting has all the standard fare. Some sportsbooks offer three-way moneylines on some hockey games, which include either team to win plus the game to end in a draw.

College Sports Betting in Wyoming

Wyoming sportsbooks allow betting on college sports with one exception. You can’t bet on player props for in-state players. The University of Wyoming Cowboys are the premier team. You can bet on them to win, cover the spread, or as part of an Over/Under bet. You can’t bet on any players to lot specific stats, even if they’re playing in a different state at the time.

Wyoming sportsbook apps went live on Sept. 1, 2021, after the Wyoming Gaming Commission approved applications from DraftKings and BetMGM. FanDuel and Caesars were subsequently approved and launched as online sportsbook operators.

Wyoming Sports Betting Laws

In this section, we’ll take a closer look at Wyoming sports betting laws, rules, and regulations.

Wyoming’s Successful Sports Betting Bill

HB 133 legalized Wyoming Sports Betting. Republican state Rep. Tom Walters introduced it in February 2021. The bill was intended to curtail illegal sports betting in Wyoming. Only a few months later, Gov. Mark Gordon signed the bill into law.

A year earlier, two bills were introduced but ultimately failed. HB 225 and HB 234 faltered, paving the way for HB 133’s passage in 2021.

Unique Rules and Regulations in Wyoming

While other states put a cap on the number of sports betting licenses they’ll offer, Wyoming did something different. The state has unlimited capacity for licenses, and the bill stipulated it would issue at least five licenses. There are now six licenses, five of which have resulted in live sportsbooks. ESPN BET has approval but is not yet live.

While the “unlimited” designation may seem amazing, it’s not likely to make a huge difference for Wyoming. The state has fewer than 600,000 residents, so there isn’t a ton of room for smaller sportsbook operators to gain market share. That’s why you only see the biggest names offered in the state.

Wyoming Sportsbook Licensing and Oversight

The Wyoming Gaming Commission governs sports betting in the Cowboy State. The licensing fees are relatively low. Operators pay a $100,000 fee upfront, which gets them a five-year license pending approval by the WGC. When the five-year period is over, operators are charged a $50,000 renewal fee.

Wyoming Legal Betting Age

Wyoming’s legal betting age is 18. However, most sportsbooks require you to be 21 or older no matter what. You’ll need to prove your age with a photo ID and other details when you first sign up for a WY sportsbook.

WY Sports Betting Legalization Timeline

Wyoming sports betting only took about two months to move through the legislature and pass in 2021. Since then, there hasn’t been a ton of motion in the state, mostly because it’s been business as usual.

Underdog Fantasy launches peer-to-peer pick’em DFS contests in Wyoming.

Wyoming approves FanDuel and Caesars for launch, and both go live by the summer of 2022.

Rep. Tom Walters introduces HB 133 to legalize sports betting in Wyoming. The bill passes and is signed by Gov. Mark Gordon in April. The first sportsbooks (DraftKings and BetMGM) go live in September.

Two sports betting bills—HB 225 and HB 234—are introduced but ultimately stall out while Wyoming focuses on pressing matters related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Supreme Court repeals the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which opens the door for states to legalize sports betting.

Wyoming Sports Betting Revenue and Handle

The Wyoming Gaming Commission announced that the state’s sports betting industry collected $9,721,357.01 in total wagers for the month of July 2024, down slightly from the $10,886,389.28 in total handle posted in June.

Such declines are typical during the summer months as sports betting peaks in the months with football and March Madness.

DraftKings led all the sportsbooks in the state by generating $5,223,638.46 of the total handle.

Speaking of helpfulness, that’s the third element of the customer service trifecta. We like it when a sportsbook makes it easy to get good help. It starts at the beginning; talking to an agent without needless bots is a huge benefit. Then, we look at the quality of the answers and help provided by the representatives.

Welcome Bonuses

All of Wyoming’s sportsbooks offer lucrative welcome bonuses, so they all excel in this category to some degree. The most common bonuses are deposit matches and “bet & get” deals. Where To Bet in Wyoming: Retail Sportsbooks

While Wyoming is home to a handful of land-based casinos, none of them have retail sportsbooks. The North Arapaho tribe owns and operates all of Wyoming’s casinos.

How Wyoming Compares to Nearby States

Wyoming borders three other legal sports betting states: Colorado, Montana, and South Dakota.

Wyoming’s other neighbors are longtime holdouts in terms of sports betting. Idaho doesn’t have sports betting, and Utah is one of the most famously anti-gambling states (it doesn’t even have a lottery).

Colorado Sports Betting

Colorado was one of the earlier adopters of sports betting in the Rockies and near-West Coast. It was legalized in 2020 and currently offers 17 online sportsbooks. The state also has a plethora of retail casinos and sportsbooks. Suffice it to say Colorado is a booming state for gambling.

College sports betting is allowed in Colorado, except for prop bets.

Montana Sports Betting

Montana has online sports betting, but it is very limited. Only Sports Bet Montana, offered by the lottery, is allowed to take online bets.

Retail sports betting is allowed at hundreds of participating Montana Lottery locations around the state. Montana doesn’t have any major betting restrictions on college sports. The state does impose single-wager betting limits: $250 in-person and $1,000 maximum online.

South Dakota Sports Betting

South Dakota legalized sports betting in 2020, but it is limited to the casino properties in Deadwood and a few other tribal casinos. You can bet online, but only if you’re physically within a Deadwood casino.

South Dakota has toyed with potential online sports betting expansion, but its efforts have been in vain.

Pros and Cons of Wyoming Sports Betting

Like any state with some form of legal online betting, Wyoming has its pros and cons.

Pros

  • Flexible Market: Wyoming has the potential for unlimited sportsbooks in the state based on its licensing structure and legislation.
  • Top Sportsbooks Available: FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, and Fanatics are all available in Wyoming. ESPN BET is licensed but has yet to launch. These are some of the best sportsbooks in any market.
  • Plenty To Bet On: Wyoming allows bets on all professional sports and college sports (with one exception, which is in the “cons” section.

Cons

  • Retail Shut Out: There are no retail sportsbooks. All bets must be placed online.
  • Age Old Question: While Wyoming’s minimum betting age is typically 18, sportsbooks typically require you to be 21 or older regardless.
  • Prop Zero: No prop bets on in-state college players, and the state is considering a full college prop ban.

Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS)

Wyoming allows Daily Fantasy Sports, but only in the peer-to-peer contest format. DFS platforms that offer pick’em style contests without the peer-to-peer element aren’t allowed in the Cowboy State.

Social Sportsbooks

Horse Racing Betting

Live horse racing typically takes place between May and September. Racing dates are staggered at three Wyoming racetracks:

  • Energy Downs at Cam-Plex Morningside Park in Gillette (May and June)
  • Wyoming Downs Racetrack in Evanston (June to early August)
  • Sweetwater Downs Complex in Rock Springs (mid-August and September)

Lottery

The Wyoming Lottery — locally known as WyoLotto — offers a handful of draw games:

Online Poker

Online poker is not legal in Wyoming yet. Typically, it is introduced alongside online casinos if and when states legalize. Wyoming’s small population makes it a less-than-ideal state for online poker. To offer reasonable player pools, it would likely have to join a multi-state pact.

Esports

Wyoming’s sports betting rules do not specifically prohibit esports betting. Sportsbooks in the state may offer these bets, but they are relatively rare.
