Gaming Edge’s TL;DR

  • Alberta’s gambling regulator has set new rules for how land-based casinos can promote online gaming products, giving the market another concrete sign that the province’s regulated online casino launch is getting closer.
  • The updated standards from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission arrive ahead of Alberta’s expected market opening in July.

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) has released updated standards concerning how Alberta casinos can promote online gaming products while keeping retail and online gambling activities distinct.

In practical terms, casinos can promote online casino operators on-site. However, they cannot use the Winner’s Edge loyalty program as a bridge to online promotional offers such as sportsbook bonuses or online casino incentives. The framework is intended to preserve responsible gaming safeguards while defining how physical casino properties fit into Alberta’s upcoming online market.

The rules suggest the Canadian province wants a clear line between in-person casino loyalty activity and online gambling promotions. The online casino market is expected to launch next month.

No partnerships with casinos required

Alberta has borrowed several concepts from Ontario’s regulated online gambling model. Ontario launched its competitive regulated market in 2022, and Alberta is now positioning itself with a similar structure as it prepares for its own launch.

One notable point is that Alberta does not require partnerships between online operators and physical casinos. That could shape how companies enter the province, especially compared with models where land-based access is a condition of participation.

At the same time, the new promotional standards show that even without a mandatory partnership requirement, the province is still defining how retail casinos and online operators can interact in the same market.

Reportedly, 43 operators have already registered ahead of launch, underlining the level of interest in Alberta’s new market.
