2024 Carolina Panthers Preview

Last season was one to forget for several reasons in North Carolina. Luckily, the Panthers have already made some big moves this offseason, which should give the Carolina faithful something to feel good about.

During the early free agency period, the Panthers signed Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis to big-money contracts. This should help a horrendous Panthers offensive line and give Young more of a cushion this season.

They also added some depth on defense and made a splash on the trade market, acquiring wide receiver Diontae Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Carolina’s skill room is still not all that great, but adding a high-ceiling talent to a receiver room that really only featured an aging Adam Thielen was a big move.

Sure, this roster is going to be much improved, and Young should thrive in Dave Canales’ system, but there are not a lot of weapons; the tackles up front are still a question, especially last year’s first-round pick Ikem Ekwonu, and defensively, they have gotten weaker after trading Brian Burns to the Giants.

Despite the early offseason additions, this should be another growing season in Carolina. 

Last year was dysfunctional from the start, and it showed on the field almost immediately. Former head coach Frank Reich’s spread offense has been featured on many high-scoring teams. The problem is that the Panthers had nowhere near the personnel to run this scheme. 

As a result, Young struggled, and everything went to hell almost instantly. But, a full year to learn Canales’ system with additions to the offensive line and skill room should give Young all the tools he needs to have a big jump in development this season. 

However, the defense is brutal, Carolina is in a tough division, and there is the outside chance that Young may not be any good. He showed flashes last year, but even with a poor roster, Young just simply was terrible last season. 

I think he will improve this season, and the oddsmakers agree. His passing yards prop (3150.5) and touchdown pass prop (18.5) at DraftKings would be significant improvements. The rest of the team, however, is just not good enough to trust them to go over. 

FanDuel lists the Panthers’ total wins as 5.5, a complete win higher than its competitors. While the under on that wager carries a bit of juice, it’s hard to envision Carolina winning more than five games in 2024.
