Duke Betting Preview

Undoubtedly, Duke has the better roster and will most likely win this game. I know that March Madness is the time of upsets and Cinderellas, but the talent advantage is simply too big to ignore.

One area Vermont can attack is outside shooting, as the Blue Devils struggle to defend the three-point line. Duke ranks 97th in opponents’ three-point shooting percentage (32.6%) and 113th in three-point attempts allowed per game (20.4%).

However, Vermont plays at such a slow pace that they almost need to be perfect when shooting the ball to have a chance. If the shots are not falling, the Cats could get run out of the gym very quickly, as they do not have the size to counter Kyle Filipowski down low.

If the Catamounts can defend the three-point line and continue defending all three levels well, they have a decent shot at keeping this game close or outright winning if a few bounces go their way.

However, a talented guard trio of Jared McCain, Tyrese Proctor, and Jeremy Roach should be enough to overwhelm the opposition.

Vermont Betting Preview

Vermont has won the America East Tournament for the third straight season. Their reward is playing one of the most talented teams in the country. Despite only winning two games all-time in March Madness, the Catamounts are a familiar face this time of year and should not be taken lightly.

According to KenPom, the Catamounts play at the 349th-ranked pace and are solid defensively. However, the offense can sometimes become stagnant, which will hurt them against Duke. Fewer possessions per game means Vermont will have to score at a higher clip than average.

Luckily, there is some hope with this offense. They rank 24th in Rim & 3 Rate and have a couple of deep-ball threats in TJ Long, Aaron Deloney, and Matt Veretto. It wouldn’t be too surprising if Vermont could stay in this game from start to finish by dominating on defense and hitting some open shots.

Although Duke does not allow many open threes, it can get sloppy defending the arc. This is by far the most talented team Vermont has seen this season, so it must make the most of its limited possessions to have a chance at the Round 1 upset.

Duke vs. Vermont Predictions & Betting Pick

March Madness is the best for several reasons, including the number of upsets we see every season.

Vermont could be the next team to pull off a first-round shocker, but they drew a horrendous matchup for their style of play. If the Catamounts were playing a more up-tempo team, they would be in a much better spot.

Instead, they are taking on Duke, which ranks 231st in tempo. This means Vermont will need to capitalize on its limited possessions at a higher rate. Offensively, they rank 116th in eFG% and 127th in shooting efficiency. While they take high-quality shots (at the Rim or from deep), Duke’s defense has a massive athletic advantage. If the Cats can jump out to an early lead, there is a chance they can pull off the upset.

Duke should win this game, but the spread is too rich for our liking. Instead, we will focus on the total. In this matchup, possessions will be limited, leading to fewer shots and the clock continuously running.

The trends support the under, and that’s what we will roll with for our Duke vs. Vermont betting pick.
