FanDuel has reinstated a 50-cent fee on certain Illinois sports bets after pausing the charge in April 2026. The move again puts the spotlight on how Illinois’ tax structure is shaping sportsbook pricing, especially for bettors making smaller wagers.
FanDuel brought the fee back on Oct. 7, according to reporting from Deadspin. The charge does not apply to every bet: straight wagers of at least $25, parlays of at least $10, and bets placed entirely with bonus bets are exempt.
FanDuel revives a fee it had paused earlier this year
This is not a new policy for Illinois customers, but a return to one. FanDuel announced the fee in June 2025 and began charging it in September before suspending it in April 2026. Now, the operator has reinstated the 50-cent charge on qualifying wagers in the state.
The reported reason is Illinois’ sportsbook tax setup. In addition to a graduated sports betting revenue tax, the state also imposes a per-wager tax on licensed sportsbooks. Operators pay 25 cents on each of their first 20 million accepted wagers during the fiscal year, then 50 cents on every wager after that threshold.
Illinois’ revenue tax ranges from 20% to 40%.
Why the change matters for smaller Illinois bettors
The fee lands hardest on lower-dollar bets. A $5 straight bet, for example, becomes a $5.50 outlay once the fee is added — a 10% increase in cost.
That helps explain why the exemptions are structured around larger wagers and bonus bets. Bettors placing straight bets of $25 or more or parlays of $10 or more can avoid the charge, while customers who prefer smaller stakes may feel the impact most directly.
