It should come as no surprise who the final two teams in the FCS Playoffs are—the South Dakota State Jackrabbits and the North Dakota State Bisons. While FCS Championship game odds favor the Jackrabbits, a perennial contender like North Dakota State can never be counted out.

The Bisons have won nine of the last 11 FCS Championship games. But South Dakota State has been the No. 1 team in the FCS since they beat North Dakota State in Week Seven (Oct. 15).

FCS Championship Game Odds

South Dakota State (SDS) has beaten North Dakota State (NDS) in their regular season matchup for the last three years, but NDS leads the all-time series, 63-45-5. This year’s FCS Championship game will be the fifth time the two have met during the postseason; NDS has won all four playoff games.

In the following table are odds for the FCS title game from these top sports betting apps:

North Dakota State (12-2) faced a serious challenge in their semifinal matchup against Incarnate Word. The Cardinals had their way with the Bisons defense, passing for 282 yards and passing for another 257. But the offense controlled the clock with the running game (328 yards), and the defense stopped the Incarnate Word offense when it mattered most.

After falling behind 16-0 in the first quarter, the Bisons went on to win 35-32.

As for South Dakota State, their semifinal opponent did not pose as much of a challenge. Montana State could not slow down the SDS run game (282 total yards) or get their own rushing attack on track (52 yards). The Jackrabbits got out to a 28-9 halftime lead and cruised to a relatively easy win, 39-18.

Betting Analysis

North Dakota State is practically unbeatable in postseason play, having gone 44-3 in FCS postseason play; their last postseason loss came against Sam Houston State in the 2020 quarter-finals. They have never lost in an FCS Championship game.

As for South Dakota State, the Jackrabbits have dominated the competition on defense this season while doing enough on offense to win games. Not that their offense is bad, but their defense is the driving force behind the team’s success this season.

Containing the Bison run game will be challenging, but the Jackrabbits did hold ND State to just 127 yards on the ground during their regular season meeting. After falling behind 21-7 at the half in that game, the SD State defense held North Dakota State scoreless in the second half while the offense scored on each of its possessions.

South Dakota State went on to win 23-21.

Our Pick: Neither team has a clear, cut advantage over the other; expect it to be a close, hard-fought game. While the SD State defense will lead the Jackrabbits to their first FCS championship, they will not cover the spread.

Take North Dakota State, +5.
