Yes, online gambling is legal in Alberta. Technically, online gambling was never illegal here, based on federal law. However, while Alberta’s regulated online gambling market is one of the most expansive in Canada, it is somewhat restricted in terms of where you can play.
This is set to change soon though, as the province is in the final phases of opening up the market to private online casino and sports betting operators.
Alberta Gambling is Legal but Restricted
Online gambling and sports betting are legal in Alberta. However, the market is under strict government monopoly, as players can only bet on the government-operated platform PlayAlberta.ca. The platform offers slots, table games, lotteries, and sports betting.
Notably, locally regulated online gambling in Alberta became legal in 2020 when the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) launched the PlayAlberta.ca platform. Before that, players could freely register and play at offshore sites without issue, as the federal and provincial governments had no localized framework for online betting.
Interestingly, many Alberta residents still gamble at offshore sites despite the 2020 regulation.
Once the launch happens in July, players will be able to access new Alberta sportsbooks and Alberta online casinos, completely opening the market.
Legal Gambling Expanding Soon
While restricted to one platform, the legal gambling market is expansive, and the government has been laying down the framework to expand it by allowing private operators.
In May 2025, the provincial government passed Bill 48, also known as the iGaming Alberta Act, allowing international operators to enter the regulated market. Interestingly, the new open market model is based on Ontario’s sports betting market, currently the largest and most competitive in Canada.
Alberta will officially open its doors to private operators on July 13, 2026. Over a dozen operators have already registered with the AGLC and are set to launch on day one. Notable brands include DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, BetRivers, Bally’s, and Caesars Entertainment. Bet365 also plans to launch soon, although it is not yet registered with the AGLC.
Indeed, it won’t be long until players can start betting legally on the world’s biggest platforms. Notably, some platforms have even rolled out pre-registration, allowing players to open accounts before the launch date. However, players must wait until July 13 before they can start placing bets.
What Should Players Expect?
Alberta’s decision to open up the market to international casino and sportsbook operators will unlock many benefits for players. This is, in general, what the Alberta gambling launch means for players:
More Choices
Alberta residents can only legally bet on one platform at the moment. While PlayAlberta.ca certainly tries to offer robust gaming and betting platforms, it still has a few shortcomings. Residents would certainly appreciate more options, and this is what they’ll get with the new open model.
There’s already over a dozen big-name platforms all set to launch on day one, including top-of-the-range operators like DraftKings and FanDuel.
Better Offerings
The entry of multiple private operators will greatly expand the casino game and sports betting offerings. Casino gamers can look forward to thousands of slots, hundreds of variations of table games and live-dealer games, and lots of specialty and casual games. Sports bettors can also expect thousands of active markets across popular as well as niche sports.
Competitive Promotions
The best aspect of the coming expansion is the flurry of bonuses and promotions that private operators offer. Players can expect lots of enticing welcome offers as every operator tries to woo them to register. There are also lots of ongoing promotions, such as reload bonuses, cash-back offers, tournaments, and more.
Player Protections
Players will also enjoy protections that aren’t guaranteed when using offshore sites. notably, the provincial authorities already have a centralized self-exclusion program that lets players ban themselves from all regulated online casinos and sportsbooks. There are also tools like deposit limits, time limits, and reality checks.
