The Biggest Line on the Board
Chargers -11.5 vs Cardinals. This is the only double-digit spread in NFL Week 1 odds, and it is a long way clear of everything else. Los Angeles is being priced as a comfortably better roster in a home opener.
Double-digit Week 1 spreads carry more uncertainty than the same number in November. Books are pricing off projection rather than any competitive game action, which is why opening week lines move so much.
The Tightest Games
Nine NFL Week 1 odds games opened at a field goal or shorter, which is a notably compressed board. Two stand out:
- Bills at Texans, BUF -1.5. Among the slimmest numbers of the week, with Buffalo laying under a field goal on the road.
- Packers at Vikings, MIN -1.5. This one flipped. Green Bay opened as the 1.5-point favourite and the market has moved all the way to the other side.
A flipped line is worth more attention than a line that simply drifted. It means the market’s read on the matchup changed direction during the summer, not just its degree of confidence.
The Super Bowl Rematch Opener

Seattle beat New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX while laying 4.5 points. The Week 1 line has landed slightly shorter than that.
The movement tells a story. Books opened Seattle at -4 in May, pushed to -4.5 in June, then settled at -3.5 for most of the summer, where it has sat since late August. So the defending champions are being priced marginally weaker at home than they were in the Super Bowl itself.
Part of that is the Rams absorbing NFC West attention in the futures market. Seattle went 17-3 straight up and 15-5 against the spread last season. New England was 17-4 SU and 13-8 ATS.
Totals: The High and the Low
- Highest: Buccaneers at Bengals, 50.5. The only Week 1 game priced above 50, and the clearest shootout signal on the board.
- Lowest: Browns at Jaguars, 40.5. Jacksonville is laying 7.5 in a game the market expects to be low scoring.
Week 1 totals tend to open lower than they finish across the season. Offences are usually behind defences early, and books account for that.
Why Week 1 Odds Behave Differently
This is the least reliable week of the season for point spreads, and it is worth understanding why before you read too much into any number before starting sports betting.
Sportsbooks have no competitive game action to price from. Preseason tells them very little, because starters barely play. Every Week 1 line is built on projection: roster changes, coaching changes, last season’s data and market money.
That produces two practical effects. Lines move more in opening week than at any other point, and late injury news moves them harder still. A Friday inactive report can shift a Week 1 number more than a full week of action would in October.

- Track movement, not just the current line. Where a number opened tells you what the model thought. Where it sits now tells you what the money thinks.
- Wait on injury news in Week 1. Opening week inactive reports carry more weight than usual because there is no game tape to offset them.
- Shop the line. Half a point across books adds up over a season more than any single pick does.
